The plans concerning MediaSpree, the petition to hold a referendum against the project, and the consequences of this campaign made this story exceptional. It involved an association called MediaSpree e.V., founded in 2001 to facilitate cooperation among landowners, investors, and representatives of the association who had been acquiring plots of land in this vast area since the fall of the Wall.
At the beginning of 1998, the Treptowers office complex was erected on the western side of the Spree. In 2002, Universal Music moved into the building of a former egg warehouse located diagonally opposite this complex, and two years later the television company MTV settled into the building next to Universal. All of this took place at roughly the same time as the demolition of the dilapidated buildings along Mühlenstraße.
For several years, these buildings had been home to the techno club Ostgut, which became the nucleus of the subsequent spread of the modern Berlin techno scene. Another club, Casino, was also located here. On the site where Ostgut once stood now rises O2 World, a huge multipurpose arena with a capacity of 17,000 spectators. It is also the home arena of the ice hockey team Eisbären Berlin. The team moved there from its former home venue, the Wellblechpalast, nicknamed the "Corrugated Iron Palace" in Hohenschönhausen, to O2 World.
Berliners who are fluent in the local dialect enjoy giving landmarks nicknames based on their appearance. Thus, they nicknamed the Kongresshalle the "Pregnant Oyster," the Chancellery the "Washing Machine," and O2 World the "Drunken Constable" because the arena resembles an upside-down policeman's cap.
Everything seemed to be moving in the same direction. The district administration and the investors had ambitious plans that included the construction of office buildings covering several hundred thousand square meters and the creation of forty thousand jobs in the media industry, as well as the reconstruction of Brommy Bridge, which had been destroyed during the Second World War. Pedestrians were allocated only a narrow strip along the riverbank.

As part of Riga Art Week, a special afterparty evening took place at the historic Benjamiņu nams, featuring Francesca Macri, better known as System Olympia. Born in Italy and based in London, the artist delivered an atmospheric DJ set where dreamy synthesizers, vintage electronics, sensual melodies, and rhythms for the late night intertwined.

The evening began with a set by DJ Smeile, while the highlight of the program was System Olympia’s performance, creating the perfect conclusion to a day within Riga Art Week — blending the aesthetics of contemporary art, dance culture, and the romance of the night city.

Berlin is one of the main centers of street art in the world. Graffiti, stickers, and street installations are literally everywhere here, and just as DJs dream of playing at Berghain, street artists from all over the world want to leave their tag or mural on these legendary walls.

The origins of this culture go back to the time of the Berlin Wall, when the western side of the city turned into a space for political slogans and protest art. In the 1970s, punks and anarchists came here, and later hip-hop culture, which закрепила (established) the tradition of street self-expression.

After the fall of the wall in 1989, Berlin became a huge creative площадка (platform/playground): abandoned buildings, empty districts, and freedom of expression attracted artists from all over the world. Over time, street art stopped being perceived as vandalism and became part of the city’s cultural identity.

Today, Berlin is a living open-air gallery, where alongside illegal graffiti you can also see large-scale murals created by order of the city and brands. And artists such as Ben Wagin stood at the origins of this movement, turning city walls into art long before it became mainstream.
