North Texas homes, gardens and residential real estate from The Dallas Morning News
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
It's gorgeous and it's here! We're thrilled to share the latest issue of our Abode magazine. Peruse the pages for these stories and more:

Greenhouse guide: The issue invites you into the backyard greenhouse of cookbook author Alex Snodgrass of @thedefineddish — and three others around D-FW, including one with ties to musician @stevemillerband, interestingly enough. Garden consultant Kenley Larkin of @homegrowingwild also reveals her greenhouse tips.

A home with soul: @dafandco took us on a tour of a 1930s Spanish Mediterranean in Highland Park, where the infusion of style creates livability for a young family while leaning into the home's history. (You'll want to see the powder bath's original tile mixed with bold wallpaper and accessories.)

Birdhouses modeled after your own home: if you love your house, why not offer a miniature version to backyard birds? Meet the North Texas couple behind @birdyourhouse.

From drills to decoupage, florals to lace, we’ve got inspiration for dressing up pumpkins for Halloween straight through Thanksgiving. And don’t worry — we haven’t forgotten the humble, toothy grin of a classic jack-o’-lantern.

The things we reach for every day don’t have to be things we want to hide away. A handsome broom, a beautifully woven hamper or a colorful catchall can make even the most mundane activities a little more pleasant. These eight finds from Dallas-area shops and online retailers prove that practicality and good design can go hand in hand.

Leaving walls open creates room for other features. The key is balancing those possibilities with everyday storage needs. We talked with @scottparks.studio, who designed this kitchen, and @kariadesignstudio about the practical and aesthetic decisions that come with forgoing upper cabinets — and how to decide whether the look is right for your kitchen.

In 2022, Jordan Kent penned a letter to send along with the offer she and her husband, Peter, were making on a 75-year-old Kessler Park home. She wrote of her hopes to garden in the sprawling yard while watching her daughter play. The sellers accepted the Kents’ offer.

In the years that followed, the couple indeed watched their daughter play and grow, surrounded by a landscape that Jordan made her own while honoring historic elements. And she and Peter completed a yearlong renovation, restoring the home’s midcentury modern soul. Now, with Peter’s work assignment in Dallas complete, the residence known as Casa Rolinda is back on the market.

The big question: Should you renovate a home before moving in or live in it for a while, then renovate? The right timing depends as much on your circumstances as on the work the house needs. We talked to a homeowner, a builder and a designer weigh the costs, disruption and planning involved when it comes to the timing of a renovation.

A home tour offers something photographs can’t: a sense of how rooms connect, how light moves through a house and how design choices really work together. This fall’s lineup — the @turtlecreekassociation tour of homes, @heritageoakcliff, @hometourdallas, @lakewoodhometour and @kbshowhouse — opens doors to historic renovations, contemporary homes and penthouses.

Interior pros often ask clients to identify personal items they’d like included the final design. But when Ginger Curtis of @urbanologydesigns asked homeowner Allison Ray to put special things in a box, Ray paused. Just a box? There was a whole “junk room.”

Curtis walked in and was amazed. “I said, ‘Allison, that is not your junk room. That’s your treasure room.’” Their collaboration created a deeply personal space, from the horsehair chandelier to a statue of a sombrero-wearing priest.

This year, @southernlivingmag brought its Idea House to Texas, and two Dallas pros are on the roster for the project — a showcase for inspired approaches to architecture, interiors and landscaping. We talked with @jeanliudesign and @melissagerstledesign about how the Hill Country setting inspired their work. Get the story and details on tours at the link in our bio.

Don’t let the leopards and dragons fool you: This is a house that has been tamed.

When the current owners bought it, the three-story home in Dallas’ Turtle Creek area had strong modern architecture that was swathed in layers of pattern, hard lines and statement-making fixtures. “To be honest, the house really had an identity crisis,” says Rebekah Leal, a senior designer with @morganfarrowinteriors. It took a year to transform the former bachelor pad, but the result is a contemporary-cool space that’s embracing its blue period. See the home at the link in our bio.
