the hounding by xenobe purvis

i adored this i really did. i love when books are kinda historical fiction like based off a random piece of art or lore. i think that’s why i liked the wax child recently and hamnet too.

this was based on an actual 1700s story of five sisters who were “seized with frequent barking in the manner of dogs” and thus from this fiction work was stemmed. i just find that so fun. this novel is told from the pov of others in the town and the girls’ lives, not from the voice of the girls themselves and i loved that. we never actually know exactly what they are doing and thinking, only how they appear as if we are townspeople ourselves.

the mansfield sisters are so demonized and misunderstood and i treasure them and their devotion to each other. they are odd and therefore rumors spread. they aren’t what is considered socially normal and are ostracized. they are just girls at the end of the day who want to be free and love each other.

all the narration povs are so clever and stunning to bring us all sides of the town. i felt like a literal townsperson in petes boat or working on their grandpas farm or drinking in the bar.
