A Boston math teacher found out his younger brother, a college sophomore, was in kidney failure. He couldn't donate himself, and the family was looking at a wait that could run seven years. πŸ’™

Andrew Allen, a custodian at the same school, heard about it and asked to be tested. He was a match. He gave one of his kidneys. The transplant happened within a year.

Living donation is major surgery, not a gesture β€” it's a decision to make slowly, with a transplant team. But finding out what it involves is one phone call. Swipe for where to start πŸ‘‰

Not in a position to donate? Registering as an organ donor takes two minutes at registerme.org. Then tell your family.

A school district just asked its whole region for 517,000 acts of kindness. πŸ’›

Why that number? 517 is the Lansing area code. It belongs to the place, so everyone there can see themselves in it.

They have six weeks: October 1 to November 13, World Kindness Day. And it isn't just students β€” the district invited families, businesses, community groups and residents to add their acts too.

The lesson is portable. A number that means something local, plus a date on the calendar, turns "be kind" into something a town can actually finish.

Swipe for the four decisions behind running one where you live πŸ‘‰

What's your area code? Put it in the comments.

576 people. One beach. 51.5 tonnes of waste gone in a single day. 🌊

Ananse Beach in Nungua, Accra had been collecting plastic for years. Then neighbors, students, local groups, businesses and the municipal assembly all turned up on the same Saturday morning and hauled it off β€” roughly the weight of 40 small cars.

It was one push in Mayekoo's Coastal Restoration Initiative.

Here's the thing about litter: it doesn't leave because a few people care a lot. It leaves because a lot of people show up at once.

Swipe for how to do this where you live, starting with the step most people skip πŸ‘‰

Send this to the friend who complains about the litter on your street.

Typhoon No. 25 pushed muddy water through homes in Sakura, Japan β€” about 300 of them flooded above floor level, the worst of any city in Chiba Prefecture. Above floor level means the water rose past the floorboards. Tatami, furniture, walls, everything. πŸ’™

Then volunteers arrived. Small teams, house by house, hauling out soaked mats and ruined belongings, then clearing the mud. One man brought power tools and took furniture apart so the work would go faster.

Here's the part most people get wrong: showing up unannounced after a disaster usually slows the work down.

Swipe for how to actually help πŸ‘‰

Her sump pump failed on a Sunday morning. By the time the water stopped, it had taken her bedroom, her laundry room, and boxes from nearly 50 years of teaching art. πŸ’™

So she asked for help. Volunteers from the Kenosha Disaster Response Team showed up, hauled ruined things up the stairs, and tore out the carpet beside her.

"I couldn't do it without them."

Swipe for what to do when it's your neighbor β€” including the 24–48 hour rule most people don't know πŸ‘‰

Send this to someone who'd show up with a shop vac.
