I first heard Hiss Golden Messenger in 2016. I was with friends in a Starbucks, and unbeknownst to them, I disengaged, and was trying to identify who was singing the song over the house system. Later I Googled “Ah, Houston you scared me sober,” and learned it was a song called “Biloxi” by Hiss Golden Messenger and discovered the album, “Heart Like a Levee”! The following year “Hallelujah Anyhow” came out and, despite my enthusiastic fandom for many artists, I literally never found someone like M.C. Taylor, who I swear had been reading my emotional mail. Since 2014’s “Lateness of Dancers” this guy has been on a run of 8 albums, that for me, scream “defiant hope”! Anyway, I saw HGM last night again and I also finally had a chance to meet M.C. Taylor, a down-to-earth kindred spirit. I got some stellar autographs on two mini-posters. The first is a William Gedney photo from his Eastern Kentucky series, which was included in the deluxe Heart Like a Levee album. The second is a poster of original artwork (Sam Smith & M.C. Taylor) from the boxset of his first 4 albums. He included two of my favorite lyrics ever for me! Go see Hiss if you get a chance and check out “I’m People” on Chrysalis. I cannot believe that little curly-haired goofball is 28 years old today! Honestly, I was afraid to have a son, and God knew better so he gave me two! I’m so glad too! There is an unfathomable well of affection within me for this stellar man! Wes has challenged me and helped me grow. He’s brilliant, kind, and a man after God’s own heart. I love hanging out with him and we get another adventure at the Hollywood Bowl tonight! Get this: He’s going to be a father in February. I love you so much, Wes! Happy birthday! by @doahlynd

My Uncle John would have been 70 today! My heart has been heavy all day thinking of him on his birthday, but I get to celebrate him by celebrating the arts! His lovely bride, my Aunt Toni, is directing Neil Simon‘s “Laughter on the 23rd Floor” and it closes today! John loved Sid Caesar‘s “Your Show of Shows” and this play is based on Simon’s experience as a junior writer on that show. John is here in spirit! Happy birthday Johnny! Today is Mikayla’s birthday, and I want to highlight what a blessing she is in my life! Kayla is my daughter Kasey’s fiancée! Kayla is already part of the family though and I couldn’t be more excited to have her has a daughter-in-law! I’ve been blessed to be the “third wheel” on many adventures and she is such a blast, kind, easy to get along with, and beautiful inside and out! Today is my sister’s birthday! Cami is 1 year older than me. One of the best moments of my life was when I was 7 and my mom married Cami’s dad, Mark. I got two sisters instantly! It is so hard for me to believe the little guy in these photos turns 30 today! I’m not gonna lie, I was terrified to have a son because of my fatherwound, but God gave me Max and healed me exponentially! To love and be loved by this man is an easy joy! 33 years ago today I married my best friend, Chrisy Peña! She’s still my best friend. She’s smarter than me and helps me keep the worst parts of myself at bay. From 1996-2026 we had our amazing kids in our home, but now we are entering a new era in more ways than one! This photo is from just this week, apple pie à la mode, courtesy of my mom. You know what the secret is to a long healthy marriage…just keep driving.

In 2015, at the behest of two very astute women, Katy Castellanos and Sonia Rodarte Llamas, I was trained by the International Institute for Restorative Practices, and that same year, we, along with my dear friend, Frank Haydis, in collaboration with Project Kinship, created a very unique and beautiful course, called HEART. I just got word that, effective July 10th, SAUSD is choosing to dissolve the HEART class! Not gonna lie, it was a massive bombshell. I guess restorative practices and trauma-informed care are out of fashion. Over the past 11 years 1,156 students have taken HEART. Make no mistake, I’m grateful that I could do this for 11 years, 6 of them with Frank, and 1 year with my buddy, Andrew Ashford. This has been a “pinch me, I must be dreaming” job. Even though I strongly disagree with this decision, I remain grateful and I believe in what we did here. I will still be employed in the same district, 26 years and counting. ❤️💔❤️‍🩹 taken in Santa Ana Unified School District by @doahlynd
