It was a beautiful day in the city, and I had a wonderful time wandering up and down the streets, coming back to spots at different times to see how the light had changed, watching the buildings come to life, and being activated by the sunlight. Lots of striking colours and interplay between light and shade, one of those days that photography feels like cheating because the cityscape is just so alive and vibrant that I could point my camera anywhere and let the scene speak for itself. So much gorgeous, radiant light all around.

I've always been in love with Manchester, and had an enduring and deeply felt sense of connection to this place. This was a day when I could feel the city speak back to me through the lens, the beauty and wonder of the place already evident, my job to dutifully record its durational performance in the precessing sun. taken in Manchester, United Kingdom by @dobiecki

Trying to keep a bit of momentum going, so I'm digging through the last year or so on my hard drive and doing a bit of thinking about photography & visual art in general.

It's natural to think of a photograph as having "depth", or a three-dimensional quality, but I've always enjoyed the way in which the world is flattened in the still image. Forms which would be easily separated and discerned from one another by simply moving around and viewing them from multiple angles (as with seeing something in real life, or in the form of a moving image) becomes impossible. Instead the usually automatic process of depth-perception gives way to a more detective-like mode of viewing, and the relationships between foreground and background elements becomes more subjective, relying on less obvious clues to make visual sense of the scene.

One far-away object is suddenly brought into conversation with a much nearer one, the flattening effect of the still image draws them into close dialogue with one another. This process of reducing the world into a two-dimensional, static plane seems at first like a simplification, but I think it forces a complex and considered re-evaluation of the visual world.

Hello, it's been a while. I think at a certain point I stopped uploading my work in the face of a very image-saturated age, feeling as though there was no real place for my work in the wider landscape of social media. I had forgotten the sense of focus and quietness that still photography can bring, both as a practitioner and as a consumer of photographic work. Some of the first images I fell in love with were black and white, and concerned with the built environment, and in that vein I'm trying to return to myself creatively. Here is a small foray into that act of returning.

I had also forgotten that in the creation of any piece of work, the vital final step is to let it out into the world and allow it to be seen/heard/experienced. As I stopped putting my work out there, and my hard drives filled up with endless dead-end projects that would never see the light of day, I gradually lost the drive to make more, and felt myself shying away from what seemed like fruitless acts of creation. Coming back to this mindset of creating and sharing work feels familiar, cathartic, and freeing, like walking down the streets of ones childhood.
