Last night was beyond what I could have ever imagined in terms of support. In the first clip here, from the question and answer session after the reading, a man I’ve never met tells me he’s read everything I’ve ever written. He brought up my grandmother and Gram Parsons. He brought my ghosts into the room. And I pulled this clip to show the shock on my face when I recognize what he’s saying.

After, when I was crying, thanking him for supporting me, he told me that I might be there because of Appalachian studies, but I am the reason that Appalachian studies continues. This is someone who understands. This is someone who loves Appalachia. and there is too much to say about how good everything has been, but this is a start. by @doc.mclemore

A miracle happened this morning. My dad came for a visit. by @doc.mclemore

I went to my work Halloween party after closing the restaurant and wore a costume (Parker Posey as Fiona in Josie and the Pussycats on a budget and a time crunch) and was sober for all of it and my gold star for this is posting a thirst trap and having two days off work. by @doc.mclemore

Dreaming of being on the road for my book with my best friends again. If you live between Rochester, NY and New Orleans, where should I do a reading? by @doc.mclemore

This is a good reminder to review the books that you love in order to support their work. #goodreads #review #neworleans by @doc.mclemore

Thrifting in WV is my favorite sport. Sometimes, you thrift from a graveyard after asking permission from the ghosts (Topher). Sometimes you thrift at the Blenko glass museum bc the prices are so incredible that you can’t stop at one suncatcher, you gotta get two. And sometimes you find things with your weird name and sometimes you find lusterware like your mom collects and sometimes you find a presidential decanter to join your collection. This makes four.

I thrift wherever I go because my beautiful home is made of reminders of where I’ve been. by @doc.mclemore

It’s been such an incredible week and I keep thinking about this question. “How do you deal with your grief?”

This is how. by @doc.mclemore

This week, I hit the road with @emilycline2 to @glenville_state to see @wvfiddler and @herecomesdrbob2 and all my new friends. I met Larry LeMasters. I bought @blenkoglasscompany for me and @dmmcle50 and collected leaves from a cemetery for a friend’s birthday. My interview with @kdwinchester for @readappalachia went live which is BANANAS. And I met some students who give me hope.

Love to all the folks who got me here. Including Papa John Marshall. by @doc.mclemore

Seems like the right time to flashback to this essay published in 2018, with some photos from 2008, my first semester in undergrad, the semester I met my first attacker. It’s been almost twenty years since JLR first came into my life and I don’t refer to him here to out him. He’s not even my favorite of the bunch.

No, of the men who r@ped me in undergrad, he’s just the one I did the most work with, who spent years making sense of what he had done. Sometimes, men will see what they have done and own it.

This is why this work will always ricochet through my publications. He and all the rest are always there, just beneath the surface of my writing, lurking like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

For me and so many others, the work we do in the aftermath is all we have to redeem the damage. If I can just turn it into something, maybe it’s worth it. Which is not to say the damage inflicted by all of my r@posts was something I wanted, rather that the work I have made of what they did is a gift I make from the harm.

To the girl with long red hair already drinking too much on a Thursday, I wish you better days. Love you, kiddo. by @doc.mclemore

It’s the last time you can catch me in New Orleans for my book release! Next week I’ll head to West Virginia (more on that later) but for now, if you want to talk more about how I distilled my love for my father into a book while in New Orleans, you gotta come to @broadstcider on Friday! Thanks to @bookbanterbooks for her work, her images, her support as I stumble into the world of being an author by @doc.mclemore
