Hi, Friends! @docblocprojects is publicly launching this fall with our inaugural Intergenerational Theatre Lab and “I Went to Paterson,” a documentary theatre piece about the opioid crisis in the USA. We are pleased to be supported by a fellowship through @socialpracticecuny and a grant from @psc_cuny. We are fiscally sponsored by @idaorg (The International Documentary Association).

We are looking to expand our community and collaborate with folks doing similar work. If what we do seems interesting, reach out. We would love to meet, collaborate and conspire with you. Share with your friends and community. 📸❤️

We had a special day with our new friends at @sumud_ensemble, a community of Palestinian and Māori artists in Aotearoa, joining the first rehearsal of “Asra: Stories of Palestinian Prisoners” by Rand Hazou (@rthazou ), a documentary theatre production using puppetry and audience participation that tells the stories of Palestinian prisoners. Thank you to Rand, @acaciaoconnor , and the entire team for such a warm welcome. We walked into the rehearsal very sad because it was our last day in Aotearoa, but it’s clear that this is not goodbye, but see you very soon! 🌞🌸

We can’t believe how fast our weeks in the FIFE CoHo Residency at @bechdelproject has flown by. Over the last three months, we developed two new plays and piloted an Artist-Led Citizen Journalist program. A moment of gratitude to all of our artists, journalists, organizers, and collaborators who brought talents, creativity, brilliance, care, collaboration and joy to our spring residencies, performances, and projects.

DocBloc developed two new works in progress: WE RISE!, a participatory documentary musical by aaron moore ellis (@mooreweirdwerds ) build from the testimonies, chants, and songs from people directly impacted by the ICE “Operation Metro Surge” in Minneapolis and “Play Without Ceasing”, an interactive solo performance about the experiences of growing up as a preacher’s kid and surviving the legacy of Project 2025 Christian Nationalism, written and performed by Wren Phoenix (@wrenlyphoenix ). We also piloted our first Artist-Led Citizen Journalist project with @monyakin , @lizjuneinbloom , @boosted_cola , and @karinajasmin_o_ , facilitated by @ashmarinaccio in collaboration with @theindypendent . Our cohort covered the 2026 NYC Rent Guidelines Board hearings and collected/presented testimonies from community members, (see last slide), produced, articles, photographs, and newspaper theatre related to housing justice. See our work in our Insta feed and on the Indypendent’s website.

We’re excited to share that DocBloc will be returning to the Bechdel Project this fall. We will be sharing opportunities on how to get involved in our fall projects later this summer. Watch this space for more information.

We are eternally grateful to Bechdel Project’s (@bechdelproject ) FIFE CoHo Residency and ART NY (@artny72 ) for providing us the space and financial support to create this work.

Last night, we wrapped our Artist-Led Citizen journalist pilot project, which brought together theatre makers and journalists lists to train and work in both areas. We published articles, made photographs, performed original interviews, and newspaper theatre. It was an exciting month. Check out our final article for The Indy (link in story).

We are so proud of our first cohort @monyakin , @lizjuneinbloom , @karinajasmin_o_ , and @boosted_cola . We are also grateful to our friends at The Indypendent (@theindypendent ), especially editor-in-chief John Tarleton.

Thank you to @artny72 and @bechdelproject for providing us the support to pilot this project!

We look forward to continuing this project.

Last night New York City tenants won a historic victory as the Rent Guidelines Board (RGB) voted to freeze rents on one and two-year leases.

The energy before the meeting was palpable despite the sweltering heat as hundreds of activists, organizers, and tenants waited to get into East Harlem’s Museo del Barrio, with ice pops and bottled water being passed around for temporary relief. Multiple chants echoed down the line: “Fight, fight, fight! Housing is a human right!” and “Up with tenant rights! Down with real estate!” The Rude Mechanical Orchestra energized the crowd with songs as they edged closer to the museum’s auditorium entrance. Attendees wore colorful shirts representing tenant organizing groups like CAAAV, NYS Tenant Bloc, and Met Council on Housing while waving multilingual posters declaring the need for a rent freeze. This is the first time since the RGB’s inception in 1969 that it has enacted a freeze on multiple-year leases, demonstrating the growing power of the city’s tenant movement.

Photos by @ashmarinaccio, @lizjuneinbloom and text by @monyakin , @karinajasmin_o_ , @boosted_cola , and Nuriel Vega DeGraff as part of a collaboration between @theindypendent and DocBloc’s Artist-Led Citizen Journalist Initiative, which brings together theatre artists and journalists to share in civic reporting and the growing need for community-based storytelling. “Freeze the Rent! Melt the ICE!” Organizers, and leaders from the New York State Tenant Bloc, West Side Neighborhood Alliance, CAAAV Organizing Asian Communities, and the Met Council on Housing chanted at a rally at Joan of Arc Park ahead of the fourth Rent Guidelines Board (RGB) hearing at Symphony Space in upper Manhattan. The activists were calling for a rent freeze for the city’s 2.4 million rent-stabilized tenants. Performers from the Dominican Carnival Dancers, Drummers from CAAAV, and the DSA Choir supercharged the crowd’s energy. In Manhattan, New York City’s most expensive borough, rent stabilization protects against rising rents and evictions, even as the average rent has soared to $5,345.

@docblocprojects is has been piloting an Artist-led Citizen Journalist (ACJ) project in collaboration with @theindypendent this spring with a fabulous cohort of multidisciplinary theatre-makers and journalists. We have been writing articles for The Indypendent, publishing photographs, doing newspaper theatre, and interview based performance. The ACJ initiative explores a hybrid model of reporting and performance, positioning theatre artists as civic witnesses and collaborators in local journalism. Here, ACJ cohort member Karina shares interview testimony she collected at the Rent Guidelines Board hearing in Manhattan.
