The New West Marine: 100 Stores, 70 Pro Reps, and a Healthier Company

West Marine has been around for almost 60 years, and President and CEO Paulee Day says that history came with "legacy burdens," like leases on stores no longer in the best spots.

The company's recent restructuring was a chance to fix that. West Marine closed stores that were poorly placed or overlapped with another location in the same market, and kept 100 stores where boaters and pros need them most. Around them, it is building a true omni-channel business: about 70 pro reps meeting with marine professionals every day, plus westmarine.com and westmarinepro.com. Online, an AI tool called Skipper gives shoppers the kind of advice they'd get in a store. Orders can be delivered to a marina, a boatyard, or a home, or picked up in store.

"The new West Marine, the transformed restructured West Marine, is a financially healthy company," Paulee told Dock Side Live Radio on Next Boat Journey. "West Marine has it covered."

Listen: Next Boat Journey with Paulee Day premieres Thursday, October 15 at 5 PM ET on Dock Side Live Radio, with encores Saturday and Sunday at 5 PM ET. Free on the Dock Side Live Radio app and at DockSideLive.com.

Do It Yourself or Do It For Me: How West Marine Links Boaters and Pros

Boating has gotten more complex and more costly, and @westmarinepro President and CEO @paulee_day says owners now want one thing above all: quick, efficient answers to their problems.

Some boaters want to do the work themselves. "Everyone's being scrappy these days," she told Dock Side Live Radio on Next Boat Journey. They walk into a West Marine, get advice and the parts for the project, and get it done.
Others have a job that's too big to fix alone, but they don't want the boat sitting at a dealer for weeks. For that do-it-for-me boater, West Marine helps them find a local pro. Those mobile technicians and dealers buy their parts from West Marine too, in the case-pack and job quantities they need, online, in store, or through about 70 West Marine Pro reps in the field.

"In essence, we link the two customers together," Paulee said. "If boaters boat, we all benefit in the industry."

Listen: Next Boat Journey with Paulee Day premieres Thursday, October 15 at 5 PM ET on Dock Side Live Radio, with encores Saturday and Sunday at 5 PM ET. Free on the Dock Side Live Radio app and at DockSideLive.com.
