What I’ve Learned in My First Four Months of Residency🇨🇦🩺

1. Feeling overwhelmed doesn’t mean you’re incompetent. Everyone, no matter how brilliant feels this way at the start. Don’t be too hard on yourself.
2. It never really gets easier, but you do get better. Competence grows with time.
3. You are qualified to be here. Don’t let imposter syndrome tell you otherwise.
4. Some days you’ll be too tired to study after work and that’s okay. Studying during work, in real time, is incredibly valuable.
5. EMRs can be frustrating at first, but you’ll get the hang of it.
6. Be kind to the nurses! they make your life (and patient care) better.
7. Feedback may sting sometimes, but it’s the only way to grow.
8. Stay humble. Stay curious. Most preceptors are more than willing to teach if you’re open to learning.
9. It’s great that you’re eager to help others, but your top priority in the first few months of residency should be focusing on your own learning.

One month to the end of my first year of Family Medicine residency, and I can honestly say it’s been an incredible journey.

The growth over the past year has been remarkable clinically, professionally, and personally. Every challenge, long call shift, patient encounter, and learning opportunity has helped shape the physician I’m becoming.

I’m also excited to step into the role of Co-Lead Resident and continue serving alongside an amazing group of colleagues.

To the incoming R1s: take a deep breath, you belong here. Residency can be tough but you are capable, resilient, and more prepared than you think. One day at a time. You’ve got this. 💪

Happy 5th Traditional Wedding Anniversary to us! ❤️🥂

I am made oh! 😄 And it all started because she said YES to me.

Looking back, I’m just overwhelmed with gratitude to God. He’s been faithful through every season, and His grace has carried us this far. Marrying you remains the best decision I’ve ever made.
