For years, I thought the goal was to escape medicine.
Turns out, I didn’t hate medicine. I just hated the version I thought I had to accept. Not for nothing but I’ve seen it all and my career has taught me that the answer isn’t always to stay. And it isn’t always to leave.
Sometimes you need a different job. A different environment. More support. More confidence. Different priorities. Or simply a different way of practicing.
And as your life changes, the answer can change too.
You don’t have to have your entire career figured out. But you do need to know that you have options.
If you know something needs to change but you’re not sure what comes next, follow me.
I’ll help you see the options you may not know you have.

A colleague of mine — sharp, experienced, knew every protocol — was let go because of perceived lack of confidence. It was how she showed up in one high-stakes moment.

This may not be apparent now but it is true that knowing medicine and owning the room are two different skills. Only one of them gets taught.
If you're still early in your career, you have something you won't have forever — grace. A debrief after the code. An attending watching your back. Use this window to practice being the person the room trusts, not just the person who knows the answer.

RNs, techs, senior residents — you're often the first to know whether someone has the room. What's the tip you'd give a trainee still learning to own it? Drop it below 👇

For most of our training, the goal is was to get chosen. You have to get into medical school. Match. Get the fellowship.

Then we start interviewing for attending jobs and it’s easy to bring that same mindset with us.

Please remember that you’re interviewing them too.

You’re trying to understand what your actual day will look like, who you’ll be working with, what happens when things get busy, and whether this job fits the life and career you want.

If you’re interviewing for an attending job right now and trying to figure out what you should be asking, feel free to DM me. I can help you figure this out.

One of the unexpected gifts of becoming a physician has been the people I’ve met along the way.

Former co-residents. Fellows. Colleagues. Nurses. Medical assistants. Schedulers. People I’ve taught and people I’ve learned from.

Years later, those relationships still matter.

Recently, someone reached out because a person they knew needed a gastroenterologist. I reached out to my network, and people were immediately willing to help.

It was a good reminder that your career isn’t just the jobs you’ve had or the places you’ve worked. You’re also building a community along the way.

Be good to people. Invest in your relationships. You never know when you’ll have the opportunity to show up for someone or when they’ll be glad to show up for you.

Which job would you choose a or b ? This question comes up an online forums all the time, and often i'm asked the same of my mentees. Before you compare salary, schedule, call location PTO. In any of the important details, the first question is what problem are you solving for because two physicians can look at the same exact offers and make completely different decisions. And both can be right

You have to get clear about what problem you're solving for is it more time with kids? Is it financial stability? Is it the need for mentorship? Is it more autonomy

And sometimes once you identify the actual problem, you realize neither a or b is the answer. Maybe there's an option c that you haven't considered. Because you started with the choices instead of the problem

Okay, create your decision starts with doing some inner work. Which I know can sometimes seem tedious, but what are you solving for and what do you value at? Which option supports those things.

If you're deciding between jobs right now and keep going back-and-forth DM me, I maybe be able to help. by @doctorlisajones

Early career can be very confusing.

This week, I’ve had multiple phone calls with mentees and other early career attendings about compensation, mentorship staying, leaving and everything in between. Young

Young Physicians do not know how powerful they can be. Please listen…

You don’t have to beg for an opportunity.
You don’t have to settle because you’re grateful to have an offer.
You don’t have to prove your commitment by overworking.
You don’t have to stay somewhere just because you chose it once.
You don’t have to build your career the way everyone else did.

Early in your career, it can feel like you have to take what you’re given.

If you’re beginning your job search or thinking about leaving,, please know you have more choices than you think my wish for you is that you build the confidence to choose what aligns with who you are — and the courage to move on when it no longer does.

Save this the next time “ I have to” shows up

Start with 5 values you want your career to support.

Because two physicians can look at the exact same job and come to completely different conclusions—and both can be right. You just may have different values.

This is Episode 1 of The Next Job Files—everything I wish I'd known about choosing, evaluating, and negotiating physician jobs.

If you're already thinking about your next move, tell me:

What's the ONE thing you know has to be different in your next job?

Medicine can feel incredibly lonely when you’re trying to figure everything out by yourself.

And sometimes the problem isn’t that you need better advice.

You need different people for different things.

A mentor for perspective.
A coach to help you get clear and move forward.
A sponsor who advocates for you when you’re not in the room.
A therapist to help you take care of the person underneath the white coat.

One person was never supposed to fill all of those roles.

So here’s your homework: Write down these four roles and put a name next to each one.

Can’t fill in all four?

That’s not a failure. That’s information.

Now you know where to start building your squad.

Save this and come back to it. 🦸🏾‍♀️

Remember, even on the hardest of days that where you're standing was once the goal. No, it's totally okay to want more want something different. Realize that you work so hard for something that doesn't fit you. But every once in a while, take a deep breath and look around. You've made it to a place, a past version of you was working really hard to reach. You can be grateful for where you are. And still decide where you want to go to next. #earlycareerphysician #womeninmedicine by @doctorlisajones

A job can check every box of paper and still not be the right job for you. Prestige compensation, title schedule they matter, but so do your values, the life you want outside of work and how you actually want to practice medicine. The goal isn’t justified a good physician job. It’s to find one that’s good for you. #earlycareerphysician #womeninmedicine #physicianjob by @doctorlisajones

Shout out to the brave @juliarose.md . It gets easier. It's true that sometimes the job you thought was easier is just hard in a way. You haven't experienced yet. It's quite the adjustment to make early in your career. It's not the workload, but it's the weight of knowing the decision. It's yours, and that part can feel very heavy at first. But with time, your judgment gets stronger. You become more efficient. You learn what deserves a second look. And what doesn't? And you start to figure out what work actually fits you. If you pay close enough attention, you can also figure out where your values lie. And this will make finding your first or next job much easier. I promise. #EarlyCareerPhysician #NewAttending #womeninmedicine #residency #fellowship by @doctorlisajones
