Oh the places you’ll go if you never stop moving forward…

September pushed me in so many ways out of my comfort zone, but God never fails to remind me that he places things in my heart for a reason, and if I trust in him and do the work, everything else will fall into place and make sense when it’s supposed to. I am so grateful for the opportunity to witness the greatness that @doctoramira is building and has built with @amiraaestheticsdental. It was truly inspirational to witness. The lectures and knowledge gained from @dr.rose.ilift drbrandonmack @drcalinpop and @doctor.q_ was invaluable and something I’ll continue to take forward with me in my career, so I thank you all. Have your parents ever said to you “just wait, you’ll see when you…..”?

I’m seeing exactly what they meant by that in my 30s lol. Once you reach a certain age you start to give your parents more grace and realize they really were doing the best they could with what they had.

My mom was 23 when she got married and had me. She never grew up in a two parent household and was raised by her grandmother. They struggled a lot. She grew up poor in Montgomery, AL. Despite her very humble beginnings she went on to become an Attorney. I still remember sitting in Cecil C. Humphrey’s cafeteria and coloring in my coloring book until she finished classes. I watched her work so hard to give me and my sibs the life we have. There were plenty of nights she never even made it to her bed and just passed out on the couch from pure exhaustion.

My Dad grew up in Jamaica, Queens NY. He grew up in extreme poverty. He was even homeless at times and often had to ride the train day and night because the women shelters his mom and sisters stayed in didn’t accept males. He never got to graduate High school because he had to work to support his mom and younger sisters. Despite his circumstances, my Dad got his GED and went on to graduate college (the first in his immediate family) at Rust in Holly Springs, MS. My Dad never complains about anything. Even when I get frustrated about life my Dad often reminds me of where we came from. He always says, “your grandmother scrubbed floors for white families for a living, she would’ve done anything to be where you are”. “There are things I’ve went through that you don’t even know about”, he would say to me.

My parents mean everything to me. Seeing what they went through so that me and my siblings could have a better life, I work everyday to make sure their sacrifices weren’t in vain. They did the best they could with the tools they were given. I now know it’s my responsibility to go even further in life, and because of them I can. We all face challenges, and life is not fair at all. Some of us have had to make a way out of what seems like no way, but perspective is everything. Celebrated Black Excellence with the Houston Black Dental 🦷 Society. It’s always such a pleasure meeting new docs and networking with clinicians in the area. I left feeling inspired and encouraged to keep showing up the best way I can for my patients. Of course we had to shout out XU!

I had no idea what I was in for when I moved to New Orleans at 18. Xavier University of Louisiana is so much more than an institution of higher learning. At Xavier I gained community, a network of professionals spanning across the U.S. and internationally. You could go anywhere in the world and meet a “Xavierite”, and they aren’t blending in. They’re standing out in their fields. I learned the importance of serving others. Every other week we were volunteering at shelters, cleaning roads, painting houses. We served, and we were glad to do it. I leaned on my faith. As the only Catholic HBCU in the U.S., faith was the foundation of Xavier. We partied like no tomorrow (we deserved it, we studied ALOT), but on Sunday we found our way on that school bus 🚌 to church.
Xavier molded me into the woman I am today. XU is STILL recognized as the #1 producer of black medical graduates in the United States. I became the first doctor in my family. I built forever friendships. I met my now husband. It happened at Xavier. Im so grateful to be an Alum. Cheers to 100 years XU! 🫶🏽❤️
