Exclusive: India’s New Atlanta Consul General Outlines Priorities for Southeast

Three days after taking office on August 26, 2026, India’s Consul General in Atlanta, Dr. Sumit Seth, a trained physician, outlined his key priorities for the mission, including consular services, economic engagement, education and stronger connections with the Indian diaspora across the Southeast.
In his first exclusive interview since assuming the role, Dr. Seth spoke with South Asian Herald on August 29 about the growing potential of the India-Southeastern United States partnership, lessons from his previous diplomatic assignment in Central America and how his background in forensic medicine has shaped his approach to diplomacy.

Honored to meet Mr. Sumit Seth, Consul General of India in Atlanta 🇮🇳🇺🇸

At an event organized by Mata Mana American Telugu Association and NATS (North America Telugu Society), I had the chance to speak with him directly. His message was simple and powerful — stay connected with our people, and know that your Consulate is here for you. He personally shared the Consulate’s emergency helpline and email for any Indian national in need.

This is exactly what community means to me — bringing people together and making sure no one feels far from home. As someone leading a 1.5M+ NRI family through Melody Mocktail, moments like these remind me why we do what we do.

It was a privilege for SaviKannada Jacksonville to be invited to an exclusive meet and greet and dinner with Dr. Sumit Seth, Consul General of India in Atlanta, during his visit to Jacksonville. 🇮🇳

A distinguished diplomat with 21 years in the Indian Foreign Service, Dr. Seth most recently served as India’s Ambassador to Panama, with concurrent accreditation to Costa Rica and Nicaragua. A doctor by training, he holds an MD in Forensic Medicine and authored the textbook Review of Forensic Medicine before choosing a life of public service. He brings a people-first approach to consular work. As he puts it, “Every application comes with a story. There is a family involved.” Since taking charge in Atlanta, he has made it his mission to bring the Consulate closer to the communities it serves. In his words, “We need to leave the ZIP code.”

On September 29, Dr. Seth met with leaders of Jacksonville’s Indian community organizations. His warmth and easy sense of humor set the tone for the evening, and what stood out most was the genuine interest he took in each leader present: their work, their journey, and the person behind it.

The discussion included:
• Consular camps in Jacksonville, bringing services closer to home
• A point of contact in Jacksonville for consular assistance
• Showcasing our community’s talent, culture and traditions through the Consulate’s platforms
• His vision of the Five Ts: Traditions, Trade, Technology, Tourism and Talent

Before the evening ended, Dr.Seth left us with one piece of advice: when Jacksonville chooses its point of contact for the Consulate, look to the youngsters. Trust them, back them and give them the chance to lead, rather than keeping leadership with the same few people year after year.

SaviKannada Jacksonville was represented by President Dr. Prabhu Gubbi and Vice President Rakshitha Brutsche-Gowda, along with Dr. Sushmitha.
