Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, a reminder that behind every statistic is a human story, a family, and a community left hurting.

This conversation hits incredibly close to home for me. Just down the road from my hometown of Dayton, 20-year-old Pierre Damas Bel lost his life to suicide in Springfield. Pierre was a student, athlete, and bright young man with so much future ahead of him. His story is a heartbreaking reminder of how heavy invisible burdens can be, and how crucial it is that we foster empathy, support, and genuine care for one another.

Mental health struggles, overwhelming stress, and feelings of isolation do not discriminate. We need to build a world - and local communities - where people feel seen, valued, and safe enough to ask for help.

Women’s History Month reminds us that progress in medicine, science, and leadership has always been driven by remarkable women whose voices shaped the future.

In my latest piece for @forbes , I had the privilege of highlighting insights from leaders in psychiatry, including Dr. Marketa M. Wills, MD, MBA, FAPA, CEO & Medical Director of the @apapsychiatric whose perspective on leadership stood out: great leadership is rooted not just in technical skill, but in communication, empathy, and the ability to listen deeply.

Her message was clear: the most effective leaders combine expertise with emotional intelligence. Being open to feedback, staying non-defensive, and continually refining how we lead are not optional skills—they are essential.
