Doey’s E21 is a perfect example of why sometimes less is more.

Rather than chasing big power or throwing an engine swap at it, the focus has been on keeping the character of the car intact and simply perfecting what was already there.

A recent engine and engine bay refresh has brought everything up to another level, without losing what makes the E21 so special in the first place.

It’s a car that feels considered rather than overworked original character, just executed better.

Exactly the kind of build we love at RollHard, and more than worthy of a place in our Favourite 10.

Thought I’d do a before-and-after post of the E21’s engine bay. I’ve owned the car for 12 years now, and as clean as it’s always been for its age—with 90% original paint—the engine bay was the one thing that always let it down.
It’s taken 2 years to get it to this point, and there were definitely times I wondered why I started 😅, but I’m so glad I stuck with it. Seeing how it’s turned out has made all the stress worth it.

Massive thanks to @kagggz and @ramairfilters for supplying the filters—they’ve finished the bay off perfectly. Couldn’t be happier with how it’s all come together! by @doeboyfresh

@rollhardd 2026 Done! What an amazing show as always, first time the E21 has been out in two years plus its longest drive since having the bay and engine refresh and it somehow managed to pick up an award! which I think @j3ey and @_yeknom_ need to have credit for as well because if it wasn’t for them the car would not be where it’s at today. 🤍 by @doeboyfresh

Nearly 2 years off the road doing the engine/bay but finally the E21’s a ripper! Volume up! Checked the driveway cam and caught the exact moment the E21 fired up for the first time in nearly 2 years.
Pure joy and excitement from me and @j3ey… and perfect timing from @georgie22 who missed it by seconds and was not impressed 😂

After nearly 2 years… it’s finally running. 😅
I won’t pretend this hasn’t been a huge learning curve — I’ve never tackled major engine work before, just the usual maintenance. But with a lot of help (and patience) from some great mates, it’s made it to this point.
Massive thanks to @j3ey for being an incredible friend, guiding me through the moments I was completely out of my depth, and always taking the time to explain things properly. And to @yeknom for stepping in on parts of the build I simply couldn’t have completed to this level or within the timeframe — seriously appreciate it.
