Did you know the Turkish letter “ğ” is almost like a ghost letter? 👻✨

In the word yoğurt, you don’t really pronounce a hard “G” sound at all.

Instead, the ğ (called yumuşak g — “soft g”) gently stretches or softens the vowel before it. So instead of saying “yo-gurt,” it sounds more like:

yo-urt / yoo-urt

That’s part of why the English word became yogurt — travelers and writers centuries ago were trying to spell what they heard from Turkish speakers. Over time, English simplified it into “yogurt” (American English) while British English kept more of the original influence with “yoghurt.”

The linguistic journey is honestly amazing:
🥣 yoğurt comes from Turkish roots connected to thickening, curdling, and kneading milk
🌍 The word spread globally through the Ottoman world and trade routes
✍️ English had over 30 different spellings before settling on modern versions!

Turkish has some beautiful sounds that don’t fully exist in English — and “ğ” is one of the most fascinating because it’s often felt more than spoken.
