This weekend - Don’t miss the return of The Magnificent Ms. Pham, at Turn Park in the beautiful Berkshire mountains!! August 28 and 29 at 7pm. And there will be delicious Vietnamese treats as well!!! See you there! by @dogfishduckfish

🌿August 28 & 29, 7pm
💙The Magnificent Ms. Pham
💧World’s first Vietnamese-American water puppet show!
🎭By acclaimed puppet-maker Tommy Nguyen and maverick director Doug Fitch and their new puppet theater company, Puppetual Motion.
🌿Presented by TurnPark Art Space, marble quarry-turned sculpture park and outdoor museum.
🎵Music by MUR with Hao Le
🫕Vietnamese food and musical performances before the show and during intermission.

Following its sold-out premiere at HERE Arts Center in New York City, The Magnificent Ms. Pham returns to TurnPark’s natural waters and landscape where - under the support of the @jimhensonfoundation - it began its life as a workshop production.

A fantastical retelling of the true story of boat person Kim Pham and her unlikely journey to becoming American, The Magnificent Ms. Pham blends lived experience, memory, literature, and myth, as it reimagines Kim’s exodus from Saigon to Houston as a Country Western musical.

Through humor, spectacle, live music, and water puppetry, The Magnificent Ms. Pham celebrates resilience, family, and feminine

The Magnificent Ms. Pham is performed on water, framing the ancient Vietnamese art of water puppetry as a vibrant contemporary form that bridges cultures while honoring its traditions.

So proud that we got this project off the ground after three years. It such a strange amalgamation of Beethoven, new music chamber ensemble, electronic sounds, cell-phone prompts, traditional Taiwanese shadow puppetry, new shadow puppetry, 3-channel video, ice cream truck tunes, whale music recorded by David Rothenberg, and all connected by viola soloist. And It’s coming to Philly and Washington next year! by @dogfishduckfish

The delightful team who put Sisila Ila Ila all together: the extraordinarily talented and willing Taiwanese musicians, the Tung Hua shadow puppet theater, representing a legacy of seven generations of puppeteers, Composer Shi-hui Chen and Coco, artistic director of the Tung Hua puppet company, Tommy Nguyen, creative editor/animator and all around incredible visual artist, me and Lawrence Yen, an ex-assistant I met while teaching at Parsons who I reconnected with, who helped engineer new shadow puppet technology, the crew, more of the crew, including viola virtuoso Hsin-Yun Huang, me and members of the Viola family, master puppeteer and patriarch of the Tung Hua family puppet group, the viola character I designed and finally, Viola relaxing on 100 year old shadow puppet furniture made of donkey hide. #shadowpuppets #nationaltheatertaiwan #chiangkaishekmemorialhall #superturboplush #hsinyunhuang by @dogfishduckfish

I am still reeling from a mind-blowification induced by witnessing the wonder of Barbara Hannigan last night, as she conducted the NY Philharmonic while singing her way through Poulenc’s opera on Cocteau’s text - La Voix Humaine, at Geffen Hall last night. The last time she performed here was as Gepopo, the spidery, robotic spy in Le Grand Macabre I directed in 2010!!!! She totally epitomizes the virtuoso artist of our time, seamlessly merging the thrall that only live performance can give with just enough technology to enhance the storytelling. Pure art all the way. I just loved it so much. #nyphilharmonic #barbarahannigan #lavoixhumaine #poulenc by @dogfishduckfish
