Dogma (1999) is Kevin Smith’s irreverent take on religion, faith and organized doctrine, following two fallen angels, Bartleby and Loki, who discover a loophole that could allow them back into Heaven, but at the cost of undoing all of existence. Beneath its crude humor and absurdity, the film is surprisingly sincere about questions of faith, doubt and what it actually means to believe.

What makes Dogma stand out is how confidently it mixes serious theological ideas with completely ridiculous comedy. Smith later described the film as coming from his own struggle with his Catholic upbringing, which helps explain why the movie can mock religious institutions while still treating faith itself with genuine affection. The result is a film that is irreverent without being entirely cynical.
