Plates & Purpose Culinary Challenge is a charitable festival experience bringing together emerging culinary talent to compete for life changing opportunities and funding toward their dream!

In the days leading up to Plates & Purpose, our finalists spent time learning from @chefdanielcastillo , @mrs_heritage_bbq , and @cf_ariiv of the @heritagebarbecue team through hands on master classes, industry conversations, and kitchen preparation.

Students learned about beef selection, trimming, and butchery, asked questions about careers in hospitality, and worked alongside one another as they prepared their dishes for the big event. Meanwhile, the Heritage team was hard at work trimming, seasoning, and preparing the incredible barbecue that would bring everyone together.

Plates & Purpose is about more than competition. It’s about education, opportunity, and investing in the next generation of culinary talent.

What happens when great food, great people, and a great purpose come together?

Plates & Purpose was more than a culinary competition. It was a celebration of opportunity, mentorship, community, and the future of hospitality, bringing together incredible food, amazing people, live music, craft cocktails, raffle prizes, and a shared commitment to helping the next generation of culinary talent chase their dreams.

Guests enjoyed an unforgettable afternoon filled with award winning barbecue from Chef Daniel Castillo and his team from Heritage Barbecue, creative side dishes from our talented student finalists, live entertainment from DJ Peter Paul and Soul Sinclair, premium whiskey cocktails from Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, exciting raffle prizes, and plenty of friendly competition along the way.

Most importantly, every ticket purchased, every raffle entry, every bite enjoyed, and every conversation shared helped support aspiring culinary professionals as they take the next step in their careers.

This week, @chefdanielcastillo and the @heritagebarbecue team supporting the Plates and Purpose Culinary Challenge had the opportunity to visit @nwknifeworks and experience firsthand the craftsmanship behind some of the finest knives in the industry.

In an incredible show of support, the #NewWestKnifeworks team customized a knife for Chef Daniel with his name engraved, and created personalized knives for each of our student finalists as well, each featuring their own name. These aren’t just tools; they’re keepsakes that celebrate their hard work, passion, and culinary journey.

On Sunday, these custom knives will be put to work as our finalists prepare their competition dishes alongside Chef Daniel in pursuit of culinary excellence and life-changing scholarship and grant prizes.

After reviewing applications from aspiring culinary talent across Colorado, we are excited to introduce the finalists for the inaugural Plates & Purpose Culinary Challenge presented by GREAT Deeds Foundation.

These talented chefs, students, entrepreneurs, and future culinary leaders will go head-to-head on June 7, serving their signature side dishes alongside a world-class BBQ experience led by Chef Daniel Castillo of Heritage Barbecue.
