In an impatient world, prose is under pressure. The sentence length in bestselling novels has fallen 40% since the 1930s. Literary gatekeepers want big numbers when it comes to a writer’s social media following, but demand the opposite when it comes to the word count of their novels. Length does not determine a novel’s value, but a mandate for short books imposes automatic limits on detail, atmosphere, and anything “extraneous.” It leaves no room for expansive prose, clipping the wings of writers whose authentic style is not short and spare. “No one is reading anymore!” is no excuse to keep lowering the bar and catering to low attention spans.
