How do you get a motivated reliable recall off leash?! I bet a picture of my dog staring up at me wasn’t the answer you were expecting. Here’s the secret: she chose to be there next to me (not in command) while walking through the otherwise distracting, exciting, fun woods trails. Why? Because it isn’t just a walk for her to enjoy, it’s a walk WE are enjoying. We have developed a bond of trust, loyalty, and fun. She wants to enjoy the walk WITH me, I am far more than just her ride to fun adventures, I am her companion in them as well. THAT is why she listens, wants to run right back to me & is able to enjoy more freedom & fun. I am far more exciting to her than the squirrels, sounds, and space. With that foundation, we reinforce solid obedience skills! This is what most are missing in their recall and obedience journey. Your dog may love you dearly, but do they seek to enjoy life and adventures WITH you? That is the key in my mind. Teamwork. There are many ways to teach this in a way dogs understand: one of the best ways is through play! You can make even the most mundane tasks playful for your dog allowing you to set solid rules to the “game” while making it motivating and fun.

I have the best clients 💕🥹 Mason was so excited to show me that he and his family got me the sweetest Christmas gift (swipe to see Abbey modeling our amazing surprise). Endlessly grateful for Mason’s family for trusting me with their goofy, perfect boy! I just love him & our time together.

But for real… consider talking to your vet about using flea and tick prevention year round (even in New England!) The ticks are still out there with a vengeance and your pups can get really sick from tick borne illnesses! Even in November we pulled 5 ticks off of Abbey after a trail walk just tonight.

Clear, fair, & consistent expectations/goals is the best way to set up foundations for success in your training endeavors. If you want good communication and a strong relationship with your dog and training companions, this is so important! You can’t expect your dog to be great at something if you are not willing to put in the time & consistency to get there and maintain proficiency WITH them at a given task/command/expectation.

Do you trust your dog on leash enough to walk while holding the leash & coffee in the SAME hand?! Walks should be this peaceful & enjoyable!! Abbey still gets her time to sniff, be a dog, go potty…

BUT she also enjoys walking more when she’s not choking herself at the end of the leash & we are BOTH having fun— makes for more praise, more treats, & longer walks!! Training works, it just takes time, patience, and a whole lot of work 🙌🏼
