One of the reasons I like using a clicker with puppies is because they don’t know what our words mean yet.

In the beginning, I stay pretty quiet and focus on building value through a consistent marker. The clicker simply tells the puppy, “Yes, that’s what I wanted.” Once they’re understanding the game, I’ll start layering verbal markers on top and eventually phase the clicker out.

One thing I always prioritize early on is name recognition. A simple game like this helps build engagement, marker understanding, and teaches the puppy that responding to their name pays.

This is also one of my favorite ways to start training sessions because it gets the puppy engaged and ready to work.

Featuring Frankie, my current foster puppy (aka Franken-Spaz). He’s settling in great, has a ridiculous amount of food drive, and I’m excited to document his progress. 💚

He will be available for adoption through @bull_terrier_rescue_inc

Just a pit bull from the shelter 🧬

I realized all the different titles reflect just how adaptable I’ve always been. Life constantly changed while I was growing up, and not always in a stable way. I learned how to adjust, figure it out, and keep moving.

To be given a dog just as adaptable as me has been such a blessing. In sports and in real life. Not only to grow and learn alongside, but to explore so many different things together, to try, evolve, pivot, and never really be limited to just one lane.

Thank YOU guys for showing up for my girl again. The shares, the donations, the kind words, all of it means the world to us. This dam dog means the world to me. Little mama is a fighter — I got you, kiddo. Always have, always will. Until you show me otherwise, I’ll keep fighting alongside you. 🤍

Introducing the “wait” command and gradually adding leash pressure to reinforce the behavior.

The dog should understand the verbal cue before adding any opposition tension.

Once the dog understands what’s being asked, I’ll give the “wait” command and gently apply leash pressure toward me. As the dog maintains position, I mark with “good,” release the pressure, reward, and repeat.

The goal is to reinforce the dog’s understanding of “wait,” even when pressure is introduced, rather than automatically moving in response to it.

Build clarity first, then gradually add difficulty. 🙌🏽

Another round of bloopers with QT 🙈

No such thing as a perfect training session. Some reps are clean, some are messy, and sometimes we’re just figuring things out as we go. It’s all part of the process.

Down in motion with QT - before adding movement to any behavior, make sure your dog understands it while stationary first. Build that foundation, then gradually add movement.

I switch up my reward placement and focal points depending on what I’m working on and how she’s responding. Just playing around with different ways to reinforce a nice, clean down. 🤗

Miss thang is finally getting back into training after a little medical hiccup. Thankfully, all is well! 🙏🏽

So many different versions of myself in the past couple of years. I love you.

Becoming the version I am today has been hell. But not like the hell you’re in when you don’t grow. The other side was worth every version of me I had to outgrow.

To yesterday, to today. To her and to me. I’m beaming for this new version. 🌻

No one can ever change my mind. I love my pit bulls. Like actual pit bulls. Not Bullies. Not “nanny dogs.”
