We all have memories of school lunch. But school meals aren’t just about improving your bartering skills.

School nutrition programs can help provide kids with reliable access to food while supporting their health and learning. Free and reduced priced lunches, which 20 million kids receive each day, can also help fight food insecurity.

What was your favorite school lunch?👇

Think back on your experiences with school meals when you were a kid. The memories that come to mind will differ from person to person—but they all shaped how we view school nutrition.

Our health communication assistant Kitana Ford, for instance, remembers the smell of frozen fries heating up in ovens, huddles of students racing to get their meals, and the crunch of stale Pop-Tarts.

Now imagine you could create the school nutrition program of your dreams. What would it look like?

This week at Doing Well, Kitana interviews Sarah Martinelli, a registered dietitian and clinical associate professor at @asuhealthsolutions. Prof. Martinelli tells us about her ideal school lunch program, and walks us through the difference these programs can make in fighting food insecurity.

In the foreground, a student wearing a white chef’s hat and white coat carries a black crate filled with small blue milk cartons. At a cafeteria table to the right, another student smiles while holding up a milk carton. Part of another student holding a milk carton is visible at the bottom left. Through an open doorway in the background, three people wearing chef’s hats prepare food in a kitchen; one works at a cutting board with a knife, a smaller person works beside them, and another stands at a stove. A clock hangs on the wall. A green poster decorated with small illustrations of fruits and vegetables reads “TAKE YOUR TIME.” by @doingwellnews

Can you spot the difference between unprocessed, processed and ultraprocessed foods? 🥦🍎🥤

It can be tricky, especially when packaging and labels can make foods look similar. And just because a food is processed, doesn’t mean it’s unhealthy! The goal isn’t perfection, but to make more mindful choices. Try opting for fewer ultraprocessed foods and choosing more unprocessed or minimally processed options when you can.

We put it to the test and asked college students if they could spot the difference! How many do you think you could get right?👇
