Update 💥 I’ll be in Colorado for August! If you know folks in the Boulder / Denver area who’d be open to meeting an adventurous New Yorker, I’d love to connect with them while I’m in town 😊

Context 🙃 After a year of being back in NY, it’s time for an adventure. I started looking for a new apartment here but my heart just wasn’t on board with that plan. So I’m pressing pause on the apt search, taking a break from NY and heading to CO for a month - without knowing where I’ll go after that since my Brooklyn sublet is done (this is where it gets a little wild...)

I’m choosing to let go, take a leap and allow this experience of stepping away from NYC (my comfort zone) to change me in the ways we’re meant to be transformed by traveling and being in places that are both unfamiliar and full of possibility. Taking a risk and trusting myself to figure it out doesn’t guarantee the outcome I might be hoping for. But if I look back and connect the dots of all the times I chose risk over certainty, those decisions have led me to the most impactful experiences of my life. In this case, what I hope to find is clarity about where I’d like to put down some new roots - whether that’s in NY or elsewhere.

If you flip through the photos, you’ll find some universal wisdom from “What The Road Said” by @cleowade - a gift from my wonderful mom.

The Wrap 😎 So... pls shout if you know good peoples in Boulder / Denver, or have suggestions for awesome things to do & see. Wishing you all a wonderful summer, and stay cool out there ❤️ by @dolcevitale

I found this shot of Zion from my roadtrip last summer and it took my breath away.

On these cold grey winter days of the pandemic, the feeling of confinement is real. But my memories of freedom on the open road are a reminder... the world is full of beautiful places and people that I’m never separate from. That feeling of separation comes from a primal fear of not belonging. But I always feel like I belong in nature and wild places.

My friend @jeanettebronee likes to remind me that I feel most at home in the wild. From the time I was very small, I always wanted to be outside. I feel that way even more now as an “adult.” So I’ll continue to explore and seek adventure, because it’s the thing that makes me feel most alive. Cheers to doing more of what we love in 2022 🧡

Exactly one year ago today on 6/22/21, I left Los Angeles and began a 5,000 mile solo road trip across the country.

Some of you know that after 20+ years in NYC I moved to LA during the pandemic. I arrived in November 2020 on Election Day. I’m glad I went. And I’m glad I figured out that while I love visiting and working on projects there, LA is not a place where I’d want to live full time. So after 8 months that were both difficult and beautiful, I decided to move back east. And with NY as my final destination, I was determined to have an absolutely epic journey along the way.

To celebrate the anniversary of my adventures, I’m going to post some highlights of my trip. I’ve always wanted to share this experience, but while I was on the road I realized that posting on IG was taking me out of the moment. I rarely had cell service and downtime is scarce when you’re driving solo without a co-pilot. When I wasn’t driving, I was either hiking, exploring, eating or sleeping. Life was that simple for a few weeks, and I lived fully in the present moment.

The pics here are from my final prep in LA and Day 1 on the road - when I said “bye for now” to dear friends and drove straight from Silver Lake to Zion National Park. I shipped most of my belongings to keep the car lightly packed. I made it from LA to Springdale, UT in roughly 7.5 hours with a few pit stops. When I arrived, I scoped out the shuttle situation and spoke with a ranger at the entrance to Zion. I chatted with folks at one of the local outfitters about hiking trail recommendations, e-bikes and gear for the Narrows. Finally I treated myself to dinner at Oscar’s Cafe under the nearly full moon and read / prepped for several days of hiking.

Pics:
- My CA license plate. I’m still rocking it in NY :)
- Silver Lake Reservoir (my daily sanctuary)
- Friends!
- Dustin taking my bike apart for the trip
- My sparsely packed trunk
- The amazing mechanics who prepped my 16 year old Acura for the trip. If you ever need car repairs in LA, call Karol’s Garage in Glendale and ask for John.

For the past few days, I’ve been away with a very special group of beloved friends I have known for 30 years. Today I’m sharing this post as I return to Brooklyn. We all have our memories of 9/11. Perhaps some day I will share more of my NYC experience. On this anniversary, as always, I can’t stop thinking about all the people we lost that day, the extraordinary acts of bravery, the kindness we shared in our grief and how we took care of each other in the weeks and months after 9/11. I love you NY.

Hi friends! Some happy news ✨ After 22 years of New Yorking, I’m taking a leap and following my heart to California. Next week, I'm driving across the country to start a new chapter in LA. I’m excited to expand my world and live in a place where I've always felt more connected with nature and the outdoors.

While it’s a busy and challenging time of uncertainty in our world, I’d love to hear from you. So here’s a friendly list of suggested responses. Feel free to improvise...

– Any words of encouragement (we all need cheers every so often, especially with big life decisions & leaps of faith)

– One person you’d like to introduce me to in LA (friend, family, a fellow hiker / runner / biker, a work-related connection). Feel free to tag them

– A favorite place in LA, the surrounding area, or really anywhere in California. I’ll be taking lots of road trips.

– A favorite song for my driving playlist

Stay tuned and I’ll post some photos from the road next week. Looking forward to staying in touch, and can’t wait to see all my west coast peoples! 💛 by @dolcevitale

My grandparents, Charlotte & Charlie. They called each other “Charl” and hosted epic gatherings every week. Everyone was welcome. Their door was always open. Friends and neighbors would wander into the house at all hours, knowing they’d be greeted with coffee and a warm smile. Charlie was a master gardener, builder, and the pied piper of 11 grandchildren. His curiosity was boundless, and he turned even the smallest outing into an adventure for us kids. He taught us to love nature and each other. Charlotte had the most amazing laugh you’ve ever heard. It could stop traffic and start a party. She was full of joy and loved everyone with abandon. I miss them every day and would give anything for one more barbecue in that backyard, our Vitale family all together. Forever in my heart ❤️ by @dolcevitale
