Day 3 of our Dec '25 research trip in Norway was a challenge due to the weather but this juvenile was the highlight of the day. Killer whales, as other dolphins species, can be very curious and this juvenile seemed quite interested in our boat engine (in neutral) for a few minutes.

The first step to any research project is reading "the" literature! For DCP students with projects focused on the dolphins at RIMS, this can include any scientific papers about bottlenose dolphins, other animal species, previous DCP publications, and any scientific studies that fit with the project. Familiarizing yourself with the literature related to your project is an essential part of any research study.

PSP, CNT, PFC, BPVs, OP … oh my! An Overview Research Update from DCP
🐬🐬🐬
It seems every industry/organization has their share of acronyms and DCP is no exception! We share an overview update on the various ongoing research projects looking into small and large dolphins’ shared pair swims (PSP), contacts (CNT), pectoral fin exchanges (PFC), object play (OP), and one of their poorly understood vocalizations (BPVs). Join Kathleen and Manon as they share not only what they’ve been up to in our research projects but also what questions our students have examined (congrats to Savanna and Abby for graduating) or continue to investigate.

Small flashing light, big difference! DCP researcher Manon had a close encounter with this very curious individual who seemed to come to check out the light turning on and off on her underwater camera. This big bubble cloud could be a type of display to trigger a reaction or just an expression of excitement looking at a new "object".

A #ThrowbackThursday nod to DCP's 20 years of research & education in Bimini, The Bahamas! This week's feature: "Vee" (DCP ID#101) a female Atlantic spotted dolphin observed from 2012 - 2020. She surely has may more spots now and, we hope, multiple calves to her credit!

A few times a year we team up with @dolphincommunicationproject to teach students how sharks and dolphins are the same and how they are different. It’s always a lot of fun and great way to help local students in Bimini learn about the amazing animals in their backyard.

What's true with the RIMS dolphins is also true in Norway: we cannot have eyes everywhere when recording dolphin behaviors underwater. While Manon was filming a group of 3 killer whales from underwater, another individual was sneaking up on her… Don't worry, she saw it ... zooming by just below her!

🇬🇧 Morgan and her calf share pec fin contacts while swimming inverted … these reciprocal contacts suggest Morgan is teaching her calf about the use and importance of pec fin contacts.
🐬🐬🐬
🇪🇸 Morgan y su cría intercambian contactos con las aletas pectorales mientras nadan en posición invertida... estos contactos recíprocos sugieren que Morgan le está enseñando a su cría el uso y la importancia de este tipo de contacto.
