MenorcaNow that we’re spending more time at our home in Mallorca we’ve decided to do some mini breaks to other parts of Spain. For our first trip we spent 2 days (one night) in Menorca which is the next largest of the Balearic Islands after Mallorca. We took the car on the fast ferry from Alcudia to Ciutadella, which is 75% cheaper for us now that we have digital nomad visas. It took 1hr and 15mins. I’ve got to say I bloody loved the ferry! We stayed @hotelsesparteriamenorca hotel which was beautiful and right in the heart of town so we could walk everywhere. We ate some yummy food and some not so yummy food. It’s hard travelling with a vegetarian. Options become limited and whilst every restaurant does ‘something’ for vegetarians, when that something is always a caprese salad or a pesto pasta it becomes a little dull. Standouts for us were spinach empanadas at Pampas. It was the height of the tourist season so it was crowded but we enjoyed wandering the streets. We then drove to the capital Maô which was delightful. It has a lot of colonial architecture which felt strange to see compared to Mallorca but interesting to know the history. We became tacky tourists ourselves and did a boat trip around the bay but we loved it. We then drove to an incredibly beautiful beach called Cala Binisafúller which was a delightful way to spend the rest of the afternoon before heading back to the ferry and home. I’d like to go back and spend more time exploring but I think we should wait till the autumn or spring so we can avoid the crowds and the heat. This is a story of hope.When Shanti’s self-esteem grows, my heart skips a beat. It skips two when someone unknowingly helps it grow.Today, that someone is Dominic Franks and his wonderful cookbook.His cookbook has become Shanti’s favourite. She’ll happily sit and turn the pages, stopping at recipes and saying four words she’d never said before:“I can make that.”Those four words carry more meaning than most people will ever realise.It all started with Shanti’s Stamp of Approval. The idea was simple: I would read the recipe aloud, and Shanti would do the cooking.The challenge had two aims: to build Shanti’s self-esteem and introduce her to cuisines she might never otherwise have tried. We wanted to discover whether a cookbook that wasn’t written specifically for people with additional needs could still inspire confidence, encourage independence and help Shanti believe in herself.We had no idea where that simple idea would lead.Today, it has become one of Shanti’s favourite challenges. She gets genuinely excited about trying new dishes, discovering new cuisines and proving to herself that she can do it.Every recipe is more than a meal. It’s another step towards believing in herself.What Dominic created is more than a cookbook to Shanti.
