At the end of August, we rode the Kõkõva 900 race route one week after the official event. It began with a storm, so we got wet to the bone, riding through ankle-deep puddles in the dark. Next day after crossing to Hiiumaa the rain stopped and the scenery improved dramatically along with the mood. We then realized our brake pads were gone, with the next bike shop over 300km away on a different island (Saaremaa). Thankfully Estonia is incredibly flat, and using brakes can be avoided most of the time.

The route was incredibly slow but beautiful, through swamps, sand dunes, forest singletrack, wet muddy roads and rough coastline (there were a few normal roads too). I crashed in a muddy puddle and injured my ankle, which started hurting badly on the offroad sections. So we decided to continue only on paved/smooth gravel roads with the help of Burana. We wild camped in a field full of snails and also in an RMK shelter. Finally finished at Põhjala taproom, consuming the healing elixir. I knew Kõkõva was hard, but it was harder than I expected. The huge rainfall made parts of the route unridable — bloated puddles, fallen trees, etc. took a toll on the bodies. Nevertheless, we are happy we did it. Finally got the photos from camera from Tuscany trail and thought it’s worth an occasional post. It was so nice and different to ride somewhere outside of Finland. Wild camping every night, eating pasta and lots of haribo. Once we ate a jar of pickles and couldn’t stop farting…once we set up camp but got spooked by a local talking on the phone far away and looking at us, so we urgently re-based in the dark. Bathed in a river. Drank gifted by organizers wine at the beach after finishing. Sat on the roof of the rental van. Lost one bolt (thankfully not critical). Had zero punctures surprisingly. Enjoyed it very much. Ciao!
