These shiitake are growing REALLY slow. Most likely going to be part of the last crop of the season. If they’d just size up we’d have a substantial harvest. I highly recommend getting some, the flavor is going to be very rich and concentrated. Still rocking a great price on the best shiit you can get! 16$/lb, enough for a couple awesome meals. 🪵🍄

Today marked a monumental triumph for the shiitake farm; the first large harvest out of the new shiitake greenhouse.

It has been three and a half years since I first cut and planted logs in Auburn. Trying to grow mushrooms on logs in our climate is fraught with difficulty and uncertainty. A log doesn’t give you the same feedback a plant or even a quicker to colonize, transparent mushroom grow bag does. You can’t peel back the bark of a mushroom log to see if they’re happy and growing without irreparably damaging the potential of that log.

After significant failure, trial-and-error, and multiple restarts and farm moves, I have been contemplating the viability of the commercial log grown shiitake farm as well as my future in farming for some time. I exist mentally in a weird state of being fully vested while also almost entirely indifferent towards this incredible project and undertaking of which I have dedicated years of my life and risked everything financially for. As of right now, there is no clear future or point at which Domko Shiitakes will be profitable. I will have to do it all over again, cheaper and more efficiently in order to even begin to approach that goal.

However, while my journey of entrepreneurship has been a hard one, one thing that is certain is that I love these freaking mushrooms and I love growing them. Also, some wider concepts seem to be crystallizing into working practices and hopefully soon I will have a consistent stream of production.

Spring is coming and the shiitake know it! Last week’s nice weather caused a bumper crop of top-tier shiitake. In order to get these beauties into the hands of new customers and also to show appreciation for my repeat customers, I am doing a spring sale: $16/lb which is %20 off the usual $20. Wet conditions are making for wet mushrooms, but the logs are happy. The upcoming warmer weather following last weekends rain may cause a nice fruiting, we will see. Still learning how to best care for the shiitake logs and putting together ideas for a new layout in the greenhouse I am about to rebuild.

Did get some bangin’ donko quality mushrooms this week too that were protected deep in the stacks of mushroom logs. Most of these lower quality mushrooms are headed for the dehydrator though to be enjoyed later in soups, pastas, curries, etc. #loggrownshiitake by @domko_shiitakes

Grew this basil for pesto and to sell, but I let it go to flower and the bees are absolutely stoked. Decided today that we’ll keep the stoke going and I’ll be leaving it for them. Best $5 investment in seed ever. Sko’ bees by @domko_shiitakes

Yogi, builder extraordinaire, and certified amazing person @grahams assisted with some rack building and log moving in the greenhouse during a thunderstorm this week.
