The Journey Back to Samoa

I was 43 when I touched Samoan soil as an adult. People reminded me I’d been here at age two, introduced as part of the new generation in the 80s. Wild feeling being “remembered” by people you don’t remember — and returning 41 years later.

I planned this trip like it was my first time. I wanted to experience Fa’a Samoa, and my sister had the same goal. Growing up in Dunedin, everything I knew about being Samoan came from our community — the language, the culture, the people around us. I understood Samoan more than I spoke it. Fear held me back, even though I loved the sound of it and the feeling of knowing another language.

But this trip changed something. I spoke more Samoan than I ever have. I pushed through the fear, connected with people, and let myself be part of the environment instead of standing on the outside. I surprised myself every day — and I’m proud of that.

This trip wasn’t about me, but it was for me. Being on our land with my family, capturing moments, feeling that connection… it meant everything.

1 piece of writing from the Mind of DT (#77) - Today's piece Sunday 27/09/2026)

A hiatus is something we need to take when things just get a bit too hectic in our lives and today will have been 3 months since my last piece. After an amazing trip away with my family to Samoa, seeing the villages I come from, meeting family and friends of family and supporting them all while on arrival; no words can ever describe the feelings and emotions I went through over a 3-week trip. But also, now 3 months since I’ve been there also.

I’ve recently turned 44, still a hard-working Samoan, doing my part to get through life and understand who it is I am, alongside why I choose to do what I do and how these thoughts and actions support others.

But the reality is, it wasn’t until I arrived in Samoa on 01/07/2026 where I embarked on that journey to getting the answers I didn’t realise I had even needed; of why I am the way I am. How I can seamlessly be a person with no ego, put others in front of myself and see that everyone is sorted before I am. Behaviours that were installed within my hardware and that I seem to carry no matter where I go. And for Samoa to show me all these things in one trip, was literally a mind-trip all in itself.
Over the next few days my written pieces will be showcasing some of the amazing experiences I had on the Islands of Samoa and how they helped me understand myself, my family and my culture more clearly than another format of education I could have ever receive.

Each day will have a picture taken by myself also and the memory it serves within my brain and its impact to my heart.

Quick Shot Deets – Stevensons on Manase. An amazing 3-Star place to stay with Fale’s right on the beach waterfront, where you are greeted by the heat, the sound of the water and the cutest furry friends that are super chill.

Happy birthday to this amazing human, have managed another amazing lap around the sun, making memories along the way and drinking our way through the years with wines.

Dom's thoughts while in beautiful Samoa #4

If anyone knows me as a person, you'll know I have an affinity towards all animals and man, on this trip, I've been making stacks of furry new friends on both Savaii and Upolu Islands. Ok. I say stacks, more like a full on fur gang 🤣

But this cutie here I met the other morning while at brekky hung around my table while I sipped my coffee, with pats in between sips, just purred and kept me company 🥰

While the Island is full of stray animals, I sat there thinking, if I'm sweating badly within a week of being here, these guys are probably more climbatized than me? They are the true Samoan animals hey and live this life day in/day out 🥵

So today I'd like to Introduce you to Morning Star, or in Samoan Fetuao, which as you now know has become the main theme to my trip, naming fur friends Island names 😀 taken in Return To Paradise Resort & Spa by @domt3000
