First Ironman 70.3 in the books!

Definitely not the race I envisioned. I had a finishing time in mind, but I definitely had some setbacks. Headwinds, pouring rain, and dropping temperatures had me shivering uncontrollably, cramping, and throwing my entire nutrition plan out the window.

I told some of my buddies that I hadn’t been that uncomfortable since Raider Spirit (our version of Hell Week). 😂

But looking back, that’s what made this experience so fulfilling.

There’s something really special about voluntarily putting yourself through something difficult, pushing past the point where your mind is telling you to stop, and realizing you still have more to give.

We spend so much of our lives seeking comfort that sometimes we forget how capable we really are. You don’t always get the outcome you want, but there’s a lot to gain from refusing to quit when things don’t go your way.

Do hard things. Get uncomfortable. You’ll often find you have a lot more in the tank than you think.

More importantly, I raced to raise money for the Marine Raider Foundation, an organization that supported me during my transition out of the military in 2018. They provided a grant that helped cover my college tuition and books, allowing me to save my GI Bill for bigger educational goals.

Now I’m grateful to be in a position to give back to an organization that continues to support Raiders, veterans, and Gold Star families.

If you’re able to donate or share, I’d greatly appreciate it. Every bit makes a difference.

Last week Deep End Fitness Co-Founders & Master Instructors @don.lives and @prime_tiime had the privilege of training some serious athletes with @redline.prj

Props to these boys for having the will to get in the water out of their comfort zone.

For my bday this year I am celebrating the upcoming release of the documentary Air Hunger. Air Hunger is a feature-length documentary that sets out to investigate breath-work, both as a performance tool and as a way to release stress, anxiety and depression. The film follows the stories of a group of Deep End Fitness Athletes and Instructors to include MMA champions, Marine Raiders, and cutting-edge scientists and everyday people whose lives were quietly transformed by something as simple as how they breathe. The film also captures NFL players, USA ski athletes, the Underwater Torpedo League and the community around it. Special S/O to Director Bob van de Gronde and the entire Air Hunger team for making it happen. Premiering Oct 23rd in the United States. #airhunger by @don.lives

“My parents didn’t want me to join the military because they came over from a war-torn country.”

Don Tran’s parents came to the United States from Vietnam as refugees after the war. His father had served as a naval officer in the South Vietnamese Navy. The family eventually settled in California, where Don was born and raised. (The Veterans Project)

Years later, as Don considered military service, he recalled something his father would tell him:

“Although we don’t want you to go to the military, one day someone in this family has to repay the country for what they did for us.”

Don joined the Marine Corps after high school and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 4th Marines. He deployed to Iraq before eventually entering Marine Forces Special Operations Command and becoming a Marine Raider. (The Veterans Project) by @don.lives

Proud to stand alongside the Marine Raider Foundation. 🇺🇸

We recently wrapped up an incredible event supporting this phenomenal organization and the critical work they do to provide mind, body, spirit, and family support to the Marine Raider community.

A massive thank you to everyone who came out, supported the cause, and helped us give back to those who answer the call. by @don.lives

Why do we do dumbbell carries at Deep End Fitness?

Put simply, master your breath in and out of the water.

Panic can disrupt decision-making skills, resulting in misteps because composure went out the door. This is precisely what we train to avoid.

Carrying weight at depth increases our ability to develop breath control, regulate our nervous system, and maintain mental composure.

Through water-based therapy, exercise we DEF teaches people to manage stress, unlock flow, and maximize performance through water training/therapy.
