I „Black Thriving in High Fashion- My personal Black Thriving“ by Latisha Dwight @don.lupa
_____

BACHELORCOLLECTION: BLACK THRIVING IN HIGH FASHION- my personal black thriving

For my Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design Engineering, my final project was divided into two parts: a thesis and a six-piece fashion collection. The theme of my project, “Black Thriving in High Fashion”, focuses on the emergence of Black designers in the high fashion industry. In the academic portion of my work, I created a thesis which explored the world of high fashion, the challenges of racism within the industry, and the rise of three remarkable Black designers.

I highlighted Ann Lowe, a haute couture designer whose work I aimed to rescue from obscurity, celebrating her beautiful gowns. I also explored the legacy of Patrick Kelly, the first Black designer in the Fédération de la Haute Couture, who passionately integrated Black culture into high fashion through provocation and reappropriation. Finally, I examined the revolutionary impact of Virgil Abloh, who brought greater diversity to the industry.

My collection, titled “My Personal Black Thriving”, represents my personal journey not only as a designer but also as a Black woman. Each piece is a form of self-expression, symbolizing six life phases that I experienced on my path to my own Black thriving. These six phases and corresponding outfits are named Racism, Education, Heritage, Resistance, Prosperity, and Thriving.

The central values of the collection are pride, power, strength, empowerment, Black identity, culture, recognition, and femininity. A particular aim is to celebrate and highlight the beauty of the Black woman through features like sewn-in bust elements and seam lines that accentuate the curves of the female form.

thanks to anyone who supported me through this project <3
