Showing some Kodachrome originals with my Color Photo Design students in the WCC Photo Lab. The 35mm color transparencies [positive images] that reside on the light table were enlarged into C-41 process 4x5-internegatives, from which traditional chemical, chromogenic prints [C-prints] were produced.

4x5 color duplicates [in black mattes], also generated from the 35mm originals, were commonly crafted to be shown to editors, art directors and other creative professionals as portfolio assets to get assignments. There was no Internet when these presentation tools, techniques, and film technologies were the core marketing assets of a working professional’s business plan.

Also being displayed are numerous 3x3” color correction & color conversion filters, that were commonly placed on the front or rear lens element when exposing film. This extensive display gives us an opportunity to break down color theory into basic, tactile forms, and supports our study of the various output choices that prevailed before digital cameras & inkjet printers existed.

Ultimately these students are in pursuit of their intentional uses of color & design to convey ideas. Other topics we’ll be visiting include color relationships and the psychological impacts of color. Fine-art papers and various color management workflows in Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop are studied to support personal vision and professional portfolio development.

Saw this phenomenon of light getting breakfast at the farmers market in Missoula this morning. Known as a solar halo, it’s a glowing 22° ring of light that appears to perfectly frame the sun. The sunlight is being bent through millions of tiny, six-sided ice crystals in high cirrus clouds, behaving like mini prisms splitting light into a very faint rainbow. #thankyoujay taken in Missoula, MT by @don_werthmann

Immerse yourself in practicing several aspects of design and intentional uses of color to convey ideas! Course topics include optical color, color theory, color relationships, and the psychological impacts of color.

Students produce original images with 35mm color films & film scanners, various format digital cameras, and produce high-quality prints in the digital lab. Fine-art papers and various color management workflows in Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop are featured as well. This is an outstanding class, taught by an outstanding instructor, that supports personal vision and professional portfolio development.

Video students are strongly encouraged to register and produce short-subject footage for their promotional reels.

In this intermediate level course, students will learn the tools and techniques necessary for working with retail, editorial, or commercial clients. Several unique lighting techniques and strategies are implemented to produce photographs of people on-location. Emphasis is placed on preparing all necessary resources, inclusive of models, props, and wardrobe. A basic command of business forms and ethical issues surrounding the production and publication of these images is also obtained

Photo students are encouraged work in any film or digital camera format that supports their promotional portfolio.

Video students are encouraged to produce short-subject footage for their promotional reel.
