A hit song can become successful while the songwriter misses out on some of the money they expected.

Why? Because writing a great song is only one part of the business.

Songwriters may earn through upfront fees, co-writing agreements, publishing royalties, or licensing their songs and instrumentals. But what they actually earn depends on the rights they own, the agreements they sign, and how the music is used.

If you’re a songwriter, don’t just ask, “Can I write a great song?”

Ask, “What’s the business model behind this song?”

🎵 You don’t have to be the person holding the microphone to build a career in music.

Follow Don Maestroy for more practical lessons on the business of music.

What would you want to understand next: songwriting fees, royalties, or protecting your songs?

After a long time away from songwriting, I finally wrote a song again.

“God No Go Shame Us” is a prayer from my heart — my first in-house recording after returning to songwriting.

No perfection. Just music, faith and a prayer.

**God, You will not put us to shame. ❤️**

After 10 years without writing a song...

I finally wrote one again.

A little room.
A piano.
A song in Yoruba.
And a prayer.

Maybe this is the beginning of something.

This might look like a small guitar moment…

But I know how hard this used to feel. 🎸

AM7 is finally starting to feel natural, and I even managed to throw a few licks in.

For someone relearning guitar after years away, **this is a major milestone.**

I’m starting to hear and feel the progress.

And honestly… that’s what keeps me going.

**One breakthrough at a time. 🎸🔥**

Your music career isn’t where you expected it to be yet?
Don’t waste the season.
Use this time to refine your craft, improve your skills, learn the music business, develop your content and become a stronger artist.
Because the opportunity you’re waiting for may require a version of you that doesn’t exist yet.
You can’t control when opportunity comes.
*You can control how prepared you are when it does.*
What are you working on while you’re waiting?
