PART 1 OF 3:  Long ago, body hair on women was considered normal and not an issue whatsoever. For centuries, fashion had women wearing many layers of clothing, petticoats, undergarments and thick stockings keeping womens bodies completely covered and only seen by their husbands. But that all changed once Darwin's evolutionary theory was published in 1871 which theorized that having body hair meant your ancestry was more primitive (a.k.a closer to an ape) and those with less hair meant they had “higher anthropological development.”  Male scholars and researchers set out to prove this theory somehow. They soon claimed that a very high percentage of women in insane asylums had more body hair and were violent, animalistic and sexual deviants. This caused women to feel shame, humiliation & embarrassment about body hair which led to females seeking ways to remove their body hair. Check back everyday this week for part 2 & 3 for more interesting historic facts on what transpired.

PART 2 of 3: Although men have been shaving since the 1700s. Women didn’t shave because their bodies were never exposed due to the garments worn for hundreds of years. But, women’s beauty practices changed forever after Darwin’s theory of evolution. Most of us recall his theory about man evolving from apes, but not much more. Darwin claimed that people with a lot of body hair had low anthropological development & were more primitive a.k.a. closer to an ape than human. In an attempt to take negative attention away from hairy men being looked down upon by society, male scientists rushed to make claims that women were much worse. They insisted that women in mental institutions that were hairy had high levels of insanity & were violent, animalistic, sexual deviants - All to support Darwin’s theory.

It didn’t take long for razor companies, like Gillette to realize they could double their sales by insisting that women needed their own razors. By 1915 razor & depilatory ads were common in all the women’s magazines. They deemed underarm hair offensive & promoted hair removal as a female requirement.
After many generations of wearing painful corsets, bras, girdles, petticoats & many layers of clothing, women finally rebelled against fashion in 1923. For the first time, women were not wearing constricting clothes & undergarments to cinch the waist, push up the breasts & exaggerate their hips. Instead, they did just the opposite. The style of dresses were straight & boxy to hide their shape. They even bound their breasts to appear flatter. The dresses became shorter, showing legs below the knee for the first time. The previous opaque stockings were replaced with sheer stockings making leg hair visible. After decades of Darwin, scientists & brand advertising shaming women’s body hair, insisting that it was unacceptable, unfeminine & they’d never find love, women started shaving their legs.

Donyale Luna was so beautiful, she was called “The reincarnation of Nefertiti.” Discovered @ 17 when a photographer noticed 6’2” Donyale in a Catholic-school uniform. He told her, if she came to NY he’d get her modeling jobs. She turned 19 when the Civil Rights Act passed to legally prohibit racial discrimination. So Luna decided flew to NY in the fall of 1964.

She had no plans, no job or even a place to live, - she just had a few dollars in her pocket, a dream & the photographer’s number in her pocket. She called him & he immediately took her to meet fashion editors. Within months she was working w/ famous fashion photographers Helmut Newton, & Richard Avedon & became a muse to Andy Warhol & Salvador Dalí. She even did a Fellini film.

Luna hung out w/ celebrities, rock stars & lived the sex, drugs, rock & roll lifestyle.
Newspapers & mags called her the 1st black, star model. But many were not ready to accept the new civil rights laws. The mags that hired her got backlash & readers canceled their subscriptions. It seemed her success may be short-lived. So, she moved to London where discrimination wasn’t as prevalent.

Harper’s Bazaar shot her for a Jan 1965 cover but decided to print a vague artist’s sketch of her instead that made her look ambiguous. Luna’s cover celebration was short-lived when she got news that her mom fatally shot her father in self-defense.

1966 in London she became the 1st British Vogue Black cover model. Although she posed w/ her hand covering most of her face, showing just 1 eye w/ her hair pulled back & it was dimly lit. But it was still a major accomplishment. British Vogue was hesitant to make it known she was Black due to the US’s backlash & financial loss. (It took them 20 yrs before another black model was on its cover!)

Luna achieved many 1s for Black models before her life was cut short at 32. She left behind an 18-month-old daughter, Dream. The name inspired by MLK Jr’s Speech, “I Have a Dream.” In 2023, her daughter produced a documentary about her mom on HBO. It’s available on Max & Prime Video. Donyale would have turned 81 today. Please comment & share in memory of this icon. Did you know about Donyale? Donyale Luna

44 yrs ago today, Ingrid Bergman passed away on her 67th birthday. She starred in a many classic films: Casablanca, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Joan of Arc, Murder on the Orient Express, Notorious, Gaslight, Autumn Sonata, & Anastasia.

Her stellar acting earned her 7 Oscar noms & 3 wins. She also won a Tony Award & 2 Emmys, making her just a Grammy away from being one of the 1st to EGOT.

She married Petter Lindström at 21. He wasn’t supportive of her career & felt she was too absorbed in her work. His dismissiveness & disinterest in her passion for acting made her feel empty. Yet he refused divorce. She fell into the arms of men who treated her better, having affairs w/ Spencer Tracy, Gary Cooper, Anthony Quinn & Gregory Peck. Lindström said “I live w/ the affairs because of her income.”

Mexican jurisdiction finally allowed divorce in 1950 after she had a son w/ Director Rossellini. The adultery was scandalous. Sweden claimed she ruined their countries reputation. Racists were furious she married an Italian. US press said she was exiled, under the law that no alien guilty of turpitude can set foot on American soil again.” Bergman said, “People saw me in Joan of Arc, & declared me a saint. I’m not”

Her career stalled as Rossellini only allowed her to act in his films. They divorced in 57 & she married Lars Schmidt in 58.

While performing in a London play, she discovered a breast lump & had it removed. 4 yrs later while filming, Autumn Sonata she discovered another. That film earned her a 7th & final Oscar nomination.

After her cancer spread to her spine, her son urged her to write a memoir. He convinced her that she’d only be known through rumors & gossip unless she told her story. (published in 1980)
Although very ill, Bergman accepted her last role in the 1982 mini-series, A Woman Called Golda, about Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir. She passed away on her 67th birthday 8/29/82. After her passing, she won a Golden Globe & an Emmy for her final performance.

She still holds the #2 spot for Best Actress Oscar wins w/ 3. along w/ Meryl Streep & Frances McDormand) Katherine Hepburn-4. Celebrate this icon on her heavenly birthday. Ingrid Bergman by @donnameeinc

Just days after the death of Dolly Parton & Tim Curry, Glenn Close posted a video on social media enjoying a beautiful sunset in Montana. She mentioned she was wearing her late mother shirt & said bye. The world panicked thinking she was offering a cryptic goodbye message. But, she was just posting on social media. Although she is 79, she's still working, filming & has no intentions of leaving us anytime soon.

Close has starred in many great films & has been nominated for 8 Academy Awards. But sadly, an Oscar win has so far eluded her. In fact, she holds the record for an actress w/ the most nominations without a win. (Not exactly something you want to be immortalized in the Guinness Book of World Records for.) The good news is at the 2027 Oscars. She's scheduled to get an honorary award.

Close was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards 4 times. Her 1st Oscar nomination was for The World According to Garp, followed by The Big Chill, The Natural & most recently 2020’s Hillbilly Elegy.

Her nominations for Best Actress were for Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, Albert Nobbs, & The Wife.

She has won 3 Emmys, 3 Golden Globes, 3 Tonys & 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards & countless other awards.

If you haven’t seen these films, I recommend:
- The Natural with Robert Redford, especially if you like baseball movies.
- Dangerous Liaisons with John Malkovich & Michelle Pfeiffer is one of her biggest hit films. But…
- Fatal Attraction with Michael Douglas is a suspenseful thriller & an absolute MUST-SEE!

Here are more notable Glenn Close films & TV series.

1982 The Elephant Man
1982 The World According to Garp
1983 The Big Chill
1984 The Natural
1985 Jagged Edge
1987 Fatal Attraction
1988 Dangerous Liaisons
1990 Reversal of Fortune
1991 Hook
1992 Lincoln
1994 The Paper
1996 101 Dalmatians
1996 Mars Attacks
1997 Air Force One
2000 102 Dalmations
2004 The Stepford Wives
2005 The Shield
2014 Guardians of the Galaxy
2017 The Wife

Let’s send her our love & best wishes while simultaneously channeling her a long overdue Oscar win in the near future! Of all her films, which is your fav? by @donnameeinc

50 years ago, this week, Charlie’s Angels aired for the first time in 1976. The series about 3 female private investigators was a huge hit & the show still has a cult following today. Farrah Fawcett was getting film offers immediately so she left after the 1st season. Her character was replaced with Cheryl Ladd, who played the part of Farrah’s little sister. Ratings actually went up for a while.

Then 2 yrs later, Kate Jackson left & was replaced with Shelley Hack, who was known as the spokesmodel for Revlon’s hit fragrance, Charlie! At that time, there was only 1 original angel, Jaclyn Smith as Ladd & Hack were both replacements.

In season 4, the shows ratings went down & was rumored to be canceled, but instead, they fired the newest angel, Shelley Hack & replaced her with bombshell Tanya Roberts, who had recently been in a James Bond film as a Bond girl. But ratings continued to drop & the series was canceled after the 5th season.

Sadly we lost Farrah to cancer in 2009 & Tanya Roberts to sepsis after a UTI in 2021.

Charlie’s Angels was joyously revived in 2000 when Drew Barrymore produced a film version with Lucy Liu & Cameron Diaz. It was so successful, they made a 2nd one, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. They were great & collectively did over $523M at the box office.

In 2019 there was a remake with Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, & Ella Balinska. But it only did $73M & cost $55M. I didn’t think much of the last remake. It didn’t feel Charlie’s Angels-ish to me. What did you think?

Is anyone old enough to have seen the original show in the 70’s? Who was/is your favorite angel or angel trio? TV trivia

It’s a very sad day. The beloved Dolly Parton has passed away at 80 years old today, Aug 25th. Just a few days ago she was quoted as saying ‘I Still Have so Many Things I Want to Achieve.’ Her husband Carl passed away last year in March.

Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, revealed the news in an Instagram video the same day. He said the following.

“My name is Bryan Seaver, son of Cassie Parton, and I’m representing the Parton and Owens family today announcing the passing of my aunt, Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean, Sister, Sis and Granny to one generation and Gigi to the next,” he says in the video. “This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality. As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now.”

Seaver added: “It is an honor, an honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness. But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly. Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl, her parents and countless others who have watched her and longed to meet her in the heavens.”

His statement continued: “My family and I have shared a lifetime of beautiful memories with Dolly, but so have you. She has always been on your television, your record player, your CD and on your phone playlist, becoming an extended part of your family whether you liked it or not. Our family and the team she has entrusted with her legacy will work diligently to ensure her spirit will live with us forever. Dolly was a farmer, just like her daddy; he farmed the soil, she farmed songs and happiness. Dolly called me and said she wants to rest in a beautiful bed of plush cotton because after a life of wearing heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest.”

Seaver ended his statement, saying, “Rest in peace, Aunt Dolly — Aunt, Granny, Gigi. May God bless Dolly Parton, and may God bless you all. She will always love you.”

Most celebrities have die-hard fans as well as haters. But you’d be hard pressed to find anyone that didn’t love Dolly. She’s was an icon that radiated genuine kindness. She had more accolades than can be listed in a 2,200 character post but here's some facts you may not have known.

- She was the 4th of 12 siblings who grew up living in a shack with no plumbing, electricity, heat or running water.

- Her family was so poor, her parents paid the Dr that delivered Dolly with a sack of cornmeal!

⁃ She started writing songs at 8, performed for small audiences by 10 & by 13 she had performed at The Grand Ole Opry!

⁃ She was the 1st member of her family to graduate high school.

⁃ She played 12 instruments: Guitar, saxophone, violin, dulcimer, mandolin, pan-flute, banjo, autoharp, electric guitar, piano, recorder, & harmonica.

⁃ Her charity, “Imagination Books” has mailed 332 million books to kids all over the world for free. She started the charity to improve literacy because her dad never learned to read.

⁃ Dolly wrote her 2 biggest hit songs in the same sitting: I Will Always Love You & Jolene.

⁃ She once entered a Dolly Parton look-a-like contest as a joke. But a drag queen won!

⁃ She sleeps in her makeup in case there’s a fire.

⁃ She has a few tattoos that she won’t reveal. Only her husband & wardrobe people have seen them.

⁃ Her net worth is estimated to be as much as 650 million.

⁃ In 2020 Dolly donated $1M to Moderna to help expedite the vaccine.

⁃ She won 11 Grammys

- She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. She sang & played guitar to a standing audience. When cameras panned the audience, everyone had the biggest smiles on their face & were just beaming love for this legend.

She brought down the house with “Jolene” turning it into a Dolly-Fest by having all of the following join her on stage taking turns singing: Pink, Annie Lennox & Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics, Pat Benatar, Neil Geraldo, Cheryl Crow, Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran, Brandi Carlile, & Rob Halford of Judas Priest. It was epic.

Rest in peace Dolly. I already miss her adorable giggle. Dolly Parton by @donnameeinc

THE WIZARD OF OZ premiered nationwide in the US 87 years today in 1939. Here’s some trivia to celebrate the anniversary of this iconic film.

Buddy Ebsen was cast as the original Tin-Man. He was best known later for his characters Barnaby Jones, Jed Clampett on The Beverly Hillbillies & Audrey Hepburn’s hubby in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

After 10 days of filming The Wizard of Oz, Ebsen nearly died from the silver makeup that was applied for his character. While taking press photos in full makeup, Buddy was struggling to breathe & was immediately rushed to a hospital. For over a week his condition worsened & Dr’s had no idea why.

Prior to the Wizard of Oz, silver makeup didn’t exist. But it was needed for the Tin-Man’s look. So, makeup artist, Jack Dawn shaved aluminum & ground it into a fine powder to color the skin a metallic silver. Drs finally realized that Ebsen was suffering a severe reaction from inhaling the aluminum powder. He ended up with a congenital bronchial condition after the aluminum dust settled into his lungs. He remained hospitalized for 2 wks then spent a month more recovering at home.

But in Hollywood, the show must go on. So filming continued while Ebsen was hospitalized. He was replaced w/ actor, Jack Haley who wasn’t told about what transpired! All the scenes w/ the Tin-Man had to be re-shot w/ Haley. But the soundtracks were not completely re-done. So, when the Tin-Man is discovered & Dorothy brings him back to life w/ the oil can, it’s Ebsen’s voice you hear when they skip away singing, “We’re off to see the Wizard.”

To avoid the same makeup issues on the new actor, the artistry team converted the aluminum loose powder into a paste & applied it with a sponge instead of dusting it on with a brush. With this change, they hoped to avoid the possibility of breathing in air-born particles.

However, the aluminum paste still caused issues. Haley ended up w/ a bad eye infection which required surgery. There are more Wizard of Oz makeup issues, but I’ve hit my character limit so, I’ll do more in the future. If you don’t want to miss it &/or enjoy icon tributes, you know what to do.
