This summer I went on a week long Canadian fishing trip with my dad and nephews: Ben and Nick. We caught walleye, moon eye, and big guys: northern pike. My dad went on a similar adventure when I was Maeve’s age. I never thought I’d get to go on the same trip with him!

In preparation for our adventure, I designed matching shirts for all of us to wear. “Lac Evans with Don and The Boys. Anglin’ for a good time!” That’s exactly what we had 🎣 We fished until sunset every day and in the case of inclement weather, we played euchre. We played enough euchre to qualify as authentic midwesterners 10x over.

The peak of the trip for me came after six hours of little action while fishing with my dad. “It wasn’t like this in ‘89”, he grumbled from the bow. Then it happened. I missed a fish just off the edge of the boat. I stuck my lure back in the water and the fish ate it up. “Grab the net!” I yelled to my dad. He coached me through everything and we managed to land the monster pike: 46”. My dad has a 42” pike hanging above his mantle at home. The crazy part? We caught them both on the same lure: 5 of diamonds.

Did 5 miles on the Cuyahoga yesterday.🛶 We do this route every year and this time, we were excited to share it with M. She loved the whole experience, snacking the first half, then dipping her fingers in the water, feeling the breeze, collecting seaweed and saying hi to passersby. Donny even tied a couple of her favorite pool toys to the kayak so they could come along for the ride. Thank you to our favorite @camphicanoekayak.🫶 taken in Cuyahoga River by @donnyram

Celebrated ✋ years of Maeve all month long.

Love watching this “aminal”-loving, spaghetti-slurping, bubble-chasing, nature enthusiast grow into such an amazing kid.❤️Thank you to our village for making this time so extra special.

Last weekend we visited Fiore’s Family Restaurant & Bowling Alley in New Lexington, Ohio, before its impending sale.📍The restaurant was opened in 1937, and bowling alley 3 years later, by my great grandparents. Their photos are still on the side of the building. “They looked just like that!” my mom shouted as we got out of the car. She lived in New Lex for a short time before moving to Cleveland around age 3. Anybody who knows her, knows she is 100% Sicilian and her favorite Italian phrase, (to tell others) is “mangia! mangia! mangia!”

We gathered with three generations of Fiores: aunts, uncles, distant cousins, and significant others. We shared conspiracy stories and talked about family lore (a newspaper clipping detailing my grandfather’s arrest as a teenager for making moonshine in Hocking Hills was printed and passed around the dinner table).…scroll to the last photo for a pic.🥃🌝📰

We ate delicious tavern style pizza and Maeve dined on Shari’s homemade spaghetti and meatballs, while we gazed at the family photos on the walls. 🍕🍝Thank you to Mel for a generous dinner we are still dreaming about!!

After dinner, we checked out the adjoining bowling alley where my grandfather used to be a manager before his brother, Sam, took over. Today, Sam’s grandson, Alex, works there. We got our photo behind the counter together and compared Alex’s likeness to a photo Sam on display.

It was Maeve’s first time bowling and she got to take home a pin from her ancestral alley at the end of the night.🎳😆Thanks Sam!

It meant so much to experience this rather impromptu family reunion and to show Caitlin & Maeve a bit of my family’s history while it’s still around.❣️
