More airbending madness 🌪️ ✨

I had the pleasure of designing the super airbraid attack in the Immortal Storm sequence! I still remember when I was assigned these shots in the middle of the production and asked to figure out how a super condensed airbending attack would look like… I guess this is it!

I really had the time of my life getting to work on so many airbending shots, it’s been such a rewarding project to work on and I’m honoured to be a apart of it. 🫨

Entering the tornado 🌪️🌪️🌪️

Lots and lots of airbending magic!💨 During the project I was tasked to create a 2DFX breakdown to help explain to the 3DFX team how the compression and dissipation of the tornado could look like! It ended up just going straight to the screen 😁

I had a lot of fun doing these airbending shots in random order during the production, turns out I ended up doing a whole chunk of the sequence! Many thanks to @micshower and @jpeg.tobin who watched over me during these shots! ❤️

Here’s some airbending FX design explorations I made during the early stages of the production at Flying Bark! ✨There was a lot of back and forth trying to figure out the exact style, and as you can see version E was most successful. I was trying to find a balance between dynamic and flowing shapes, and I imagine the airbending to feel like a “ribbon” connected between Aang and Tagah.

It was never explicitly mentioned in the movie, but the airbending that Tagah and Aang use to push and pull each other into the air was known as the “airbraid” during the production. Although I had a super tiny role in the development of the style, I’m happy I had the opportunity anyways! 😁

Also to be clear I just drew my designs over these sketches and color scripts, I’m not sure who did them. If anyone knows I’ll tag them! First image designed by @jake.panian.art

Let’s go Tagah! 🌪️🌪️🌪️

The first shot was split between me and @erwinrieffel . I handled the wind shockwave on the boulder and smoke impacts on the ground, which were a combination of custom and reuse from previous shots I worked on.

I had a blast working on the second shot, literally 🌪️🌪️🌪️ Thank you to both @husain_untoro and @micshower for the guidance and feedback on these shots, they ended up looking super epic 🙌

If anybody knows who the animator was for theses shots please let me know so I can tag them ✨

Woosh! 🌊🏄‍♂️

This was the very last shot I worked on before finishing my time on the production, and I’m real happy with how it turned out!
I’m really glad I was able to contribute some water FX to the film, the team really set the bar super super high 🙌

Let’s gooooo 💨💨💨 This was one of the first shots we completed in the film featuring the airbraid FX! ✨

Early on in the project I worked closely with @husain_untoro to help develop the look of the airbraid FX for the film. This shot is extra special to me because it’s when Aang finally gets the hang of controlling the airbraid, but also around the time when we finalized the look of the FX!
