Kansas City, Missouri named April 20th 2023 -> Donte West Cannabis Justice Day!

Everyday residents from The State of Kansas cross state lines to legally purchase cannabis. With my former prison being only 20 mins away from the nearest dispensary ( FTE ), I can’t help to think what life would be like if I was still locked up there. As the Missouri cannabis industry is reaching record breaking numbers, we must not forget about the people that are incarcerated over a plant 🌱. The state of Kansas afforded me the opportunity to get home early and now I get help those incarcerated get home early to their families, a feeling I can’t describe.

Kansas City , Missouri is a place I will always call home and now Donte West cannabis Justice Day is now adopted by Kansas City, Missouri.

Wouldn’t be here without God and my family at illicit Gardens.

Thank you so much to Kansas City for coming out to show love it was unreal. taken in Kansas City, Missouri by @dontewest

On May 22nd 2017 I was sentenced to serve 7 years 8 months in a Kansas prison for a first time marijuana offense which was ironically my youngest brother’s birthday . He was just 10 years old at the time. Mom wasn’t around , so we were raised by our grandmother. 2 weeks after my arrest god decided to call our grandmother home, which left my 10 and 11 year old brothers to the foster care system. It’s the youngest that suffered the most from a broken criminal justice system.
Let me explain;
My lawyer was sick the day before my jury trial. He then filed a motion for continuance to let the judge know he did not prepare for trial due to his illness.
Secondly,
He did not get the opportunity to interview witnesses that would have testified on behalf of my innocence. However, the judge DENIED the motion and made me go to trial the next day with sick unprepared council. The only evidence the state presented against me was the testimony of a Caucasian male saying he was going to buy a pound of marijuana in question, but he did NOT receive it .
In addition, he was not charged in my case and was let go.
Finally,
sentencing day arrived and my new attorney tells the judge that people that come before this court on first time marijuana offenses usually are not sentenced to prison. In the state of Kansas, especially with no criminal history, statistics show only 5% in the last 5 Years defendant’s were sent to prison . I became that 1% that year.

“ Via Kansas Sentencing Commission “
Needless to say I may be the only inmate in the state of Kansas serving nearly 8 years for a pound of marijuana.
If you believe...
“The time does not fit the crime “
and I should be granted clemency SHARE MY STORY and TAG @govlaurakelly

HELP ME GET BACK HOME TO CALIFORNIA SO I CAN REUNITE WITH MY BROTHERS.
