Fluoride Exposure: A Renewed Concern

New NIH study links high fluoride use to low IQ in children.

Risks of fluoride in drinking water, toothpaste, and treatments are often overlooked, especially for children who might ingest toothpaste.

Halides like chlorine, fluorine, bromine, and iodine compete at receptor sites in our bodies, with iodine often displaced, affecting brain health.

Opt for fluoride-free alternatives. Protect our children's brain health and combat thyroid issues. #yourmouthisnotvegas by @dontidental

"I'm not obsessed with diabetes, but it’s alarming how many people I test show signs of insulin resistance or glucose intolerance. When you look at the link between diabetes and other chronic conditions, it dwarfs most other health issues by at least twice.

India is often called the capital of diabetes, PCOS, and PCOD, yet the way these disorders are treated is, to say the least, ineffective. The worst part? Glucose intolerance and insulin resistance are often overlooked by physicians—they're called prediabetes for a reason!

Conventional medicine doctors tend to know very little about the importance of lifestyle and nutrition and often dismiss nutraceuticals as 'voodoo science.' But the truth is, diabetes is not incurable. It's a lifestyle disorder and can be significantly managed with the right lifestyle changes.

Let's spread awareness and change the narrative around diabetes and metabolic health. #DiabetesAwareness #InsulinResistance #Prediabetes #LifestyleMedicine #Nutraceuticals #HealthRevolution"#yourmouthisnotvegas #dentistinbandra #dentistinmumbai #keto #carnivore #veganisascam #diabetes #insulin by @dontidental

The Reality of Modern Nutrition Even if you're eating right, modern farming, food processing, and environmental changes have lowered the nutrient content in our food.

💊 Why Supplements Are Essential These nutrient gaps mean supplements aren't just an option—they're essential for maintaining and optimizing your health. There are certain supplements which can work as well as a pharmacological drugs.

🔍 Hidden Deficiencies: A Silent Threat Despite our best efforts, 99% of Indians are deficient in at least one essential vitamin or mineral. These deficiencies might not show immediate symptoms but can silently undermine your health over time.

🔧 Why Optimal Nutrient Levels Matter To thrive, you need optimal nutrient levels—supporting better energy, sharper cognition, and stronger immunity. RDAs prevent frank deficiencies, but optimal health often requires more.

📈 Beyond Just Supplements Supplements alone can't fix a poor diet, but even the "right" diet might not be enough. So, give your body some slack. get yourself checked. We only have one body, and it's going through wear and tear every day. The right supplements can help support it until science advances further. 🌟

Taking care of yourself is a nonnegotiable task which you need to take seriously.

Toxic Tooth Alert: The Hidden Danger of Root Canals

Did you know a root canal tooth might be "dead," but it's far from inactive? Sealed at the top, what's inside can still escape through the roots, entering your system and spreading toxins that can impact your health.

Recent research shows a potential link between root canal-treated teeth and systemic diseases. Patients with systemic health issues were up to three times more likely to have infected root canals.

Swipe left to uncover the silent threat and understand why your root canal tooth could be putting your health at risk. #RootCanal #OralHealth #ToxicTooth #DentalCare #HealthAlert #KnowTheFacts#yourmouthisnotvegas #dentistinbandra by @dontidental

When your dentist suggests a root canal for a sensitive tooth with a deep cavity, don’t hesitate to ask about pulp capping as an alternative. If they’re reluctant, consider getting a second opinion. Root canal treatments aren’t benign and come with their own set of some serious complications, which are very difficult to diagnose, which I’ll discuss in my next post.

There are some substantial health implications of being pre-diabetic and sadly it is never given the kind of respect it deserves, both by the patient and the healthcare provider. Our body is an amazing system and it is calibrated to the T. Any change in the system will show up not always in the places most excepted. These changes have to be observed very carefully and no one can do it better then the patient themselves. Acanthosis Nigricans is one such change. It is a sign which appears much before any other symptoms of insulin resistance or pre diabetes.

By Definition: It is the darkening of the skin commonly on the fold area which has a velvety appearance. It occurs in areas such as the back of the neck, aarm pits, elbow pits and groins but ratrly can be a patch anywhere.

Causes: The most common cause is insulin resistance so it can be in any of the conditions which causes insulin resistance eg Type2 diabetes
Rarely can it be caused by hereditary or by certain malignancy
And lastly by certain drugs like glucocorticoid, oral contraceptives etc.
Aetiology: Insulin along with insulin-like growth factors are potent anabolic hormones which means it causes the proliferation or growth of the target cells, in this case melanocytes Keratinocytes and fibroblasts ( of the skin)

It is classified into 5 types
Type1 to Type5. ( based on the etiopathology)

Other classification is
Benign and
Malignant

So what should you do if you have it?

Firstly, get yourself checked because it can be something completely harmless like acral Acanthotic anomaly or it can be something really serious like paraneoplastic syndrome but both conditions are pretty rare.
The most common cause which affects more than 10 million Indians every year is insulin resistance ( remember these are the number of diagnosed cases)

The good news is you can tackle it with few easy lifestyle changes.

Chronic inflammation because of any reason is never good news. Gum health is no different. In my practice I have seen many patients ignoring their bleeding gums and saying things like “They don't bleed that much but only when I brush hard or when I floss or when I bite on to something hard”, and they somehow believe that bleeding gums has nothing to do with overall health.

Most of the time these patients have other comorbidities like cardiovascular disease and diabetes which can be negatively influenced by poor periodontal and gingival health. This is majorly because of one reason - almost everyone had bleeding gums at least once in their lifetime which stopped on its own without any treatment. One such example is during puberty…so from past experience most of us think that this is normal and it goes away on its own. But there is a problem in such cases when gum bleeding stops it can be either of the two scenarios:

1. Spontaneous Remission: where gum bleeding stopped because the gums healed as you brushed well and removed the offending plaque.

2. The disease has progressed to a more severe ischemic phase (where the bleeding stops) where periodontal ligament and bone is involved.

And as a patient it's hard to tell the difference!

So be safe and get them checked when they bleed ( or otherwise also) every 6 months before you have a loose tooth and infectious burden on your systemic health.

😷 MASKS. Let's dig into it a little bit more to understand it's infection control aspect and how it is going to help you to stay safe in an environment where there is a potential for infection.

❓But the bigger question is which mask the other person is wearing who you are in close proximity to and how is that helping you.
As a patient on a dental chair, you cannot wear a mask, and hence, it is bound to be the dentist.

🤓Firstly, let us understand the difference - a mask is anything that covers the face. On the other hand a respirator mask has certain levels of filtration. For example, the N95 respirators have a filtration efficiency of 95% for a particle size of 0.1 to 0.3 micron.

👀According to CDC , the SARS-CoV-2 spreads like most other respiratory virus-through droplet transmission. Available data indicate that SARS-CoV-2 has spread like most other common respiratory viruses, primarily through respiratory droplet transmission within a short range (e.g., less than six feet). There is no evidence of efficient spread (i.e., routine, rapid spread) to people far away or who enter a space hours after an infectious person was there.

🧑🏽‍⚕️🧠Nevertheless, when getting treated patient comes in close contact to the dentist. So it is important that both should have some kind of a barrier between them to decrease the chances of spread, assuming that both are infected. Since the patient won't be wearing a mask obviously 🙄 it is very important for the dentist that he or she wear a mask with an adequate amount of filtration so that he doesn't put those infective droplets down the patient's throat. All the more essential since the patient will be lying down in a very vulnerable position with their mouth and nose exposed!

😱❎In such case if the dentist is wearing a fancy ass mask with 360 degree gasket and bivalve p100 respirators, then he or she is protecting themselves because the mask that they are wearing filters out only the air inhaled and not what they are exhaling probably with droplets right down the patients throat.

😷Masks can be confusing with so many companies, manufacturers and numerous fancy options available.

❓The bigger question is…if the mask worn by the person in close proximity to you offers YOU mutual protection?

🧐We shall be talking in depth about this in our next post. But first, let us understand the types of masks available and their function in infection control.
