We’re delighted to share the newest edition in our Pamphlet Series, ‘Drawing our own terms: on doodles without borders in L.A.’ with Hayk Makhmuryan, artist and organizer of doodles without borders (@doodleswithoutborders), and Anna Cho-Son (@annasonnnn), artist and assistant editor with ungovernable study (@ungovernable.study) in NYC and LA this week 📖♥️

📖 Last year, when we gathered with fellow independent publishers for our Publishers Working Group, Hayk asked, “I want to be governed, but the question is, to be governed by whom?”

📖 Picking up on this potent line of questioning, Anna and Hayk discuss the origins of doodles without borders, tenants rights organizing in Los Angeles, the importance of language-work toward political education, pushing against the presumption of the so-called inevitable, and “becoming neighborly with (un)governance.”

📖 Together, Anna and Hayk ground our dispersed curriculum, “on the land … in the poem,” in our team’s beloved city of Los Angeles, the place where anarchists, likely for the first time anywhere in so-called united states, held up banners painted with the phrase “become ungovernable,” in protests against the Democratic National Convention of 2000. [1]

Los Angeles friends, please join us for “doodling without borders in L.A.,” a workshop gathering at the LA Koreatown Tenants Union (@latu_ktown) this Sunday, September 20th, 5:00 – 7:00pm!

Co-hosted by ungovernable study (@ungovernable.study) and doodles without borders (@doodleswithoutborders), “doodling without borders” activates the newest issue in our Pamphlet Series, featuring a conversion between Anna Cho-Son (@annasonnnn), artist and ungovernable study’s assistant editor, and Hayk Makhmuryan, artist and doodles without borders’ (@doodleswithoutborders) organizer.

The workshop gathers participants to explore our ability to directly shape our environments, build power, and “draw our own terms” in the face of rapid gentrification and hostile attacks on our shared lives.

Participants will be guided through a recent history of political poster, banner, and campaign design in Los Angeles and beyond. Through collage, drawing, and digital design, participants will exercise new tools to create posters and consider the impact of cooperative art-making as a practice of “entrenched place-defending.”

RSVP required, live Spanish interpretation available! All materials are provided but please feel free to bring your own papers, collage materials, tools, and anything else you’d like to use in your creations.

The newest issue of our Pamphlet Series, “Drawing our own terms: on doodles without borders in LA” with doodles without borders (@doodleswithoutborders) and Anna Cho-Son (@annasonnnn), launches in Los Angeles this Sunday at the workshop and in New York later this month at Printed Matter’s NY Art Book Fair (@printedmatter_artbookfairs).

This workshop is organized as part of ungovernable study’s 2026–27 dispersed curriculum, “on the land … in the poem,” gathered by kimi malka hanauer (@kimi.malka.hanauer) alongside the 59th Carnegie International and facilitated autonomously by groups and practitioners with their constituencies.

Happy Juneteenth! Thank you @sirolivermusic and Skid Row Park Advisory Board (@ucepp_smrs playing a very big role in stewarding it!) for this year's Juneteenth celebration in Skid Row neighborhood. May this Black freedom, human freedom celebration AND SIMULTANEOUSLY deeply unfullfilled need for Black freedom, for human freedom --> open the door for our collective imaginations and collective actions to see beyond conforming and trying to reform the evil of capitalist colonialist racism...
...and work collectively for liberation!
