Tonight I received my brown belt (1st Kyu) in Judo at Dynamic Judo.

Nearly six years ago this felt genuinely impossible. White belt was HARD. I still get humbled by our Dan grades regularly, they’re wicked, and honestly it’s nice not being the best in the room. No bollocks, I didn’t think I’d be here.

It’s felt quick, but trust me, it hasn’t been easy. This isn’t a once-a-week pat on the back. This has been study, open mats backed by a wealth of talent across both Judo and BJJ, technique testing, pressure testing, hours spent figuring out what actually works for me.

Dad was a Judoka himself, and every grade since he passed has been for him. Always on my mind, especially with 3 years since we lost him coming up on the 27th.

1st Kyu is the last grade I can get at my own club, a proper marker in Judo, the point where it stops being about learning technique and starts being about applying it. From here, I have to compete at a national centre to meet the BJA’s Dan grade requirements.

My team are mint. Supportive since day one, because I try to be the best training partner I can be, and I always listen to them.
