When you’re the villain…
but technically you’re also the reason the superhero exists.

“My bad, DopeSmack.
Character development had to happen.”

Joe Mexican (born Joseph Salcedo) is a Louisiana-based director, actor, and creator known for high-energy genre films that mix real-world grit with comic book-scale imagination.

As a director, he crafts bold, character-driven stories packed with suspense, humor, and raw emotion. As an actor, he brings authenticity and edge, most notably as Cholo in Hood Hostages. Joe is also the creator of the superhero franchise DopeSmack (part of the Dark Atom Universe), where he will star as protagonist Alex Santos. He’s the founder of Dark Atom Studios, where he continues developing original IPs like Kid Paranormal.

A true multi-hyphenate, Joe Mexican is the director who acts, the actor who builds franchises, and the independent creator turning local culture into cinematic mythology. #LouisianaRetroCon #BatonRouge #Pokemon30 #Pokemon taken in Lamar-Dixon Expo Center by @dopesmackcomic

New Orleans has always felt like a comic book city to me. The atmosphere, the music, the danger, the history… it already feels larger than life before a superhero ever shows up. That’s why characters like Gambit and Swamp Thing have always stood out differently compared to heroes from other cities.

I just dropped a new article breaking down why New Orleans works so perfectly for superhero storytelling, how mainstream comics have used Louisiana over the years, and why independent universes like DopeSmack feel right at home in that world.

Honestly this might be one of my favorite pieces I’ve written for the site so far because it feels more like a real comic culture conversation than just promotion.

They said nobody was coming to save this city…

But in New Orleans…
we make our own legends.

Man… where do I even start?

I just wanted to make this post to show love to all the amazing people who have supported DopeSmack and the Dark Atom Universe over the years. These conventions have become way more than just events to me. I’ve met so many incredible people, made real friendships, and honestly built what feels like a convention family.

Every picture here represents a memory. A conversation. A laugh. A cosplay meetup. Someone taking a chance on an indie comic creator from Louisiana. That means more to me than you probably realize.

And the crazy thing is… these are only a SMALL amount of the photos. I literally have THOUSANDS of pictures and memories from conventions over the years. Way too many to post in one upload, but trust me… I’ll definitely be posting more later because there are so many moments and people I still want to highlight.

To every fan that bought a comic…
Every person that stopped by the booth…
Every cosplayer that took pictures…
Every creator I met…
Every kid that smiled seeing DopeSmack…

Every person that shared, reposted, commented, or believed in this journey…

Thank you.
Seriously.

You all helped turn something that started as an idea into a real movement and community. Seeing people connect with these characters and this universe still blows my mind.

Much love to all my convention family. More memories coming soon. 🖤

I’ve been building this superhero universe independently in Louisiana from the ground up… no big studio, no Hollywood backing, just passion, sacrifice, comics, and a vision.

If you’re into dark superhero stories, indie comics, or cinematic comic content, go check out this new DopeSmack promo on YouTube and let me know what you think in the comments.

I’m trying to prove independent creators can build something just as exciting as the big studios.

Go like, comment, and subscribe if you want to help support the universe 🙏
