Manuela embodies her alter ego, Dora Nola, to allow herself to reconnect with creativity in a more instinctive, joyful way. The idea of creating silk scarves was a way to merge her love of textiles and colour into something that had both beauty and function.

Sketching is where Manuela explores shapes, symbols and textures in a very instinctive and loose way. A lot of what she sketches isn’t necessarily the final print, but it feeds the visual language that starts forming in my mind for a collection or design.

“Once I move into the digital phase, that’s when everything begins to collide: the different elements, the composition, the colour palette. By that stage, I usually already have a strong vision of what the final piece should feel like.” - Manuela

Transferring the design onto the scarf is the final stage, and that is when the art becomes part of someone’s everyday life.

Founded by silk scarf artist Manuela, Dora Nola began as her way back to colour, creativity, and self expression. The result? Hand-drawn, bold, colourful, 100% silk scarves and twillies.

Earlier this year, PB Co-Founder, Kendall went looking for the perfect silk scarf: real silk, artisanally made, Canadian. She found Dora Nola, ordered two pieces, fell in love, and our collaboration, The Art of Expression, began.

Now, a curated collection of Dora Nola scarves has arrived at Poppy Barley, online and in stores.

Tie one around your neck. Wrap it around your wrist. Knot it onto your handbag. However you wear it, as Manuela says, “Those layers of personalization are what make fashion feel emotional and meaningful.”
