What a week it was. A deep thank you to all my friends, family and loved ones who came through to the RCA show in the baking heat. I couldn’t have done it without your support. Too many of you to name and too short a carousel to pick. I will have to dedicate another post to my beloved RCA folks.Thank you also to everyone who stopped by to talk, ask questions, or look - You have expanded the work, and me.To have been shortlisted for the prestigious Chadwell Award (in great company!), to have had so many new conversations and to have been a part of this huge collective effort has been unforgettable. Dora Lam is a British Chinese artist based in London, currently completing an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art.Dora’s paintings draw on women found in colonial and personal archives. Extracted from their original photographic contexts, the figures are relocated within hard-edged geometric fields — spaces constructed with the minimum needed to express a place while refusing fixed geography, time, or position. Through atomised paint, opacity, and interruption, she explores visibility, silence, and what it means to keep something irreducible in the act of making it seen.Dora is shortlisted for the Chadwell Award. Introducing Dora Lam @dorathedrawer , a British Chinese artist from London.Her practice emerges from forms of silence: as a condition of being seen but not heard, and as a deliberate unsaying. Painting becomes a technology of fugitivity—not an escape from history, but from the compulsion to name, fill, and fix.The works begin on dark grounds: a void understood not as absence, but as a fertile, hospitable space sheltering what resists being fully seen.Drawn from public and personal archives, the women in her paintings inhabit hard-edged, geometric fields that hold without resolving.
