Happy [early] Heroes Day, Bahamas!

We are proud to salute the many heroes of Hurricane Dorian as a part of our launch.

Dorian and Beyond is a digital storytelling + story-keeping project that records and preserves interviews with survivors of Hurricane Dorian.

Our collection of stories is intended to be a cross-section of Bahamians who experienced Hurricane Dorian; it pays particular attention to survivors who were on The Abacos and Grand Bahama when the storm hit.

All week long, we will be saluting the courageous women and men of the Northern Bahamas who answered the call of their fellow countrymen and women.

Join us on social media outlets @DorianandBeyond and online at www.dorianandbeyond.org as we celebrate their bravery, sacrifice + service.

In love + service,
@hbcustorian

Today marks the third anniversary of Hurricane Dorian’s reign of terror upon the Bahamian people of The Abacos and Grand Bahama.

We pray god’s continued strength on every survivor, everywhere. And we remember the precious lives of so many who were lost amid the storm’s many casualties.

Our work continues at www.dorianandbeyond.org. 🇧🇸

"As a 15-time hurricane author and a 31-year professional Bahamian meteorologist, I have seen quite a bit of devastation from hurricanes in my lifetime. Still, nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to witness on these two islands impacted by Hurricane Dorian in 2019."

When Miss Bahamas Universe Chantel O’Brian made history she helped put The Bahamas even-more on the world map. Nobody more than her mom, a Haitian-born immigrant, helped put her there. 🇭🇹

Today our Spirit of Carnival awardee returned home to Nassau + into her mother’s arms. Just as she left them to conquer the world. 🇧🇸

We love that for her!

There are few if any storytellers who worked as timely and diligently as Keldra Pinder to preserve the story of Hurricane Dorian in The Bahamas.

In our latest blog, she offers us an excerpt from her award-winning book, "The Water Has Come."

I began shouting to him, “The water is here!”

With another look and a heart about to stop, he said very softly, “Oh yeah, I see it!”

Then without further ado, the water began to seep in under our “hurricane resistant” doors. The French doors at the front and the rear of the house could not stop the steady flow of the ocean that spread throughout the living room, kitchen, dining room, and every bedroom and bathroom.

The entire 3,800 square feet of floor was covered with salt water in a matter of minutes. Our house was approximately 4 miles from Dover Sound in the north. Dover Sound was a marshy area off a shallow bank that flowed into the very deep Atlantic, so the ocean had travelled a long way to get to us. There was no barrier to prohibit the ocean from meandering on land, so the water freely came.

Now at a loss for words, I felt the adrenaline begin to pump through my veins, and I trembled with fear. We looked at each other and decided to start loading up the roof. I first took off my sleepwear and got dressed in what I considered “roof attire.” I threw on a pair of jeans, a comfortable striped shirt, and my brown Velez leather tennis shoes that I bought in Columbia—my favorites, I might add. Philip had on a pair of camouflage shorts and an army green tee. He threw on some Nikes and started to patrol the house. We woke up the girls, David and Auntie Nae, and told them to get ready to go in the roof.

“Go in the roof?” they questioned until they saw what was before us. The need for sleep left the building, and everyone was alert and in action mode...

Master of Disasters Barrise N. Griffin’s latest blog post suggests, “the idle language of resilience becomes a protective barrier from looking at the administrative and legislative weaknesses in disaster management in our country.” We would tend to agree, do you?

While resilience is powerful, is it being used as a crutch? What do you think?

For over 15 years, Dr. Adelle Thomas, a Bahamian human-environment geographer, has worked at the intersections of climate change adaptation, disaster risk management and sustainable development.

Thomas is Senior Fellow of the Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience Research Centre at University of The Bahamas and Senior Caribbean Research Associate with Climate Analytics. She researches the impacts and leads efforts towards the resolution of climate injustice in the Caribbean region, small island developing states (SIDS) at-large, and Black communities throughout the United States. She also leads efforts in addressing gender inequality in climate resilience development and advocates for debt-for-climate swaps for SIDS.

Ahead of her trip to Glasgow, Caribbean Feminisms co-curator Nana Brantuo spoke with Dr. Thomas to learn more about the impact of climate change on her life and home country, the need to address and plan for community-based migration, and why solidarity is necessary - now more than ever.

"Master of Disasters" Barrise N. Griffin says resilience is no match for the new breed of disasters The Bahamas has faced—and faces!

"The survivors of Dorian have been lauded for showing huge levels of “resilience” in the face of such a devastating event. Government Ministers and leaders of international NGOs have noted how impressed they were with the resilience shown by the Bahamian people.

A problem with seeing resilience as a character trait that you either have or don’t suggests that survival and adaptability are dependent upon the efforts of the individual and not the institutions and systems in place that should make survival achievable. It implies that with will and determination we can overcome and return to normal."
