POSTS STORIES REELS

Join us this Sunday Nov 1 for a Sahmain weekend “ceilidh bheag” zoom circle gathering of Gaelic diaspora folks. Bring a wee story or a song or just your own reflections on how we can connect with this season’s traditions in ancestrally and culturally meaningful ways.

Send a message to @leuc.anthemum to get the zoom link! We’d love for you to join our circle, meeting monthly to build supportive relationships across the diaspora and do the work together

For friends and followers of @dorlachalba @theshielingcollective @deep.roots.alba … timing will be coordinated between Scottish and Turtle Island timezones. Fàitle chridheil! by @dorlachalba

At Samhain (the Irish term for this agricultural festival), we gather in reverence for the wheel’s turning and cross the threshold into the sacred dark. 🌑

This is a significant time of year in the wheel of the year, also called by different names throughout the Celtic lands, such as: All Hallow’s Eve, Oie Houney, and Calan Gaeaf.

🔥 We invite you to gather around the hearth with 4 wisdom keepers from the Celtic isles as we receive songs, stories & wisdom teachings to support us in this season.

GUESTS:
🌀 Rosemary Riedel O’Brien @wild_rose_weaving
🌀 Jules Varnedoe @hyphal_node
🌀 Àdhamh Ó Broin @dorlachalba
🌀 Dougie Mackay @dougie.mackay.story

Whatever your lineage, you’re invited to discover the wisdom of these sacred isles.

Our time together is a taste of the goodness that’s to come in our upcoming 4-month course, Voices of Celtic Wisdom.

Whether you’re interested in the course or not, you are welcome to join us!

All who register will receive a recording. 🎥

Learn even a little Gaelic and the land and culture of the Scottish Highlands begin to make more sense.
Plants named according to folk remedies and associations. Songs that keep time with the waulking of the cloth. Blessings for the fire and the turning year, legends rooted in place, and entertainment fit for the darker half of the year.
'Gaelic Land and Lore' is not so much a language course as an insight into the Gaelic world, conveyed through its language and culture. Over six Thursday's between Samhain and Midwinter, we’ll gather online each week with a different tutor from the Gaelic world, all of whom live or work in the Highlands.

12 Nov · An Introduction to Gaelic with Isica NicMhoire
19 Nov · Song & Oral Tradition with Christina Stewart
26 Nov · Cosmology and Tradition Bearing with Àdhamh Ó Broin
3 Dec · Myth & Story with Ruairidh MacIllEathain
10 Dec · The Gaelic Landscape with Caoimhe Keohane
17 Dec · Gaelic Midwinter with Fionnag NicChoinnich
Hosted by Dougie Mackay.

Each session gives you words and phrases to take away, along with a tangible experience of Gaelic Highland culture. Complete beginners are welcome, as are more advanced Gaelic learners, and hopefully fluent Gaels will find something here too. Highlanders, Lowlanders, the diaspora, and anyone with an interest in Gaelic or Highland culture are all welcome.

The course is curated and hosted by The Shieling Collective, and all profits go towards tending the Shieling site at Struy and the land and culture work that happens there.

Thursdays, 12 Nov – 17 Dec
7–8.30pm UK · 2pm Eastern · 11am Pacific
On Zoom, with recordings available throughout the course

£60 / £80 / £100 sliding scale. Pay what you can.
Places are limited.

UIDHEAMACHD NAN GÀIDHEAL

Having just returned from the sublime exquisiteness that was @medicinefestival in deepest England, Àdhamh has been reflecting upon some of the distinctive costume items that came with him and the care from within the community that created them in order to support his journey south as a representative of the Gaelic People.

A - Àdhamh’s Gaelic Elder and tradition-bearer Seumas Domhnallach: peitean (leather jerkin), breacan (plaid), léine (linen shirt), stocainnean (hose), brògan (deerskin shoes)

B - @thecraftycrawford Aodhan Crathartach: seiche-tuirc (boarskin cloak), sgiath nan corra (heron wing ie targe), buideal-uisge (water flask)

Other beautiful items were contributed by:

@aoifededanann = crios (medicine belt)
Chris Adams = pocan-bradain & brat (salmon pouch & blanket)
Paul John Deere = pocan-seun (charm pouch)
Heike Williamson = sporan (cowskin purse)
Kathi Tobiasson = bonaid ghorm (blue bonnet)
Brad Phares = sgian (alligator knife & sheath)

Not all of the items are fully traditional nor would they necessarily be worn together, but we are in the habit of looking our best for our ancestors who can no longer speak directly on behalf of our People.

We must therefore embrace the wonderful gifts that come our way in the only manner possible: by making best use of them.

A marvellous week in the company of tradition-bearers from all over Planet Earth.

CLANN NA TAOBH TUATH

Terrific few days in early June in the company of some dynamic young Sámi People resisting windfarm expansion and both domestic and foreign extraction in their lands.

A sublime pleasure to learn more about their culture, language and social history and share from our own Gaelic lore with the help of magnificent hosts in An t-Eilean Sgitheanach and project funders the Uni of SAndrew’s. by @dorlachalba

A’ CHIAD CHRUINNEACHADH-FHACAIL LUATH

A first Rapid Word Collection session in March this year to test our methodology with the wonderful Gaelic Elders of A’ Chomraich: Ailig MacCoinnich, Tormad Peutan, Dunchadh MacCalmain and Dunchadh MacRàth.

We managed to lift dozens of terms for animals and birds which will form the backbone of a word book for the community on vocab for the denizens of nature.

DIASPORA DROP-IN
Sunday April 19th
18:00GMT
ZOOM

Our second monthly online drop-in session for Scottish and Irish diaspora to explore: reconnecting with ancestral culture, language, traditions, identity, ceremony and belonging.

Hosted by Gaelic Tradition Bearer Àdhamh Ó Broin, these sessions will be an informal and non-ideological space to share perspectives, ask questions and chat over the trickier aspects of walking the ancestral path, whether you’re just starting out or a good way down the line.

It can also function as a space to discuss the “so-whats” of this journey: ie. how it might assist in stepping into solidarity with other land-based, indigenous peoples back home, as we stand together in our cultural roots.

The sessions will be supported by Ben Reid-Howells of Deep Roots Alba — a Scottish-Canadian community organiser whose focus is on solidarity in the reconnection journey.

For the link, email: gaelic@dorlach.scot

FREE / By Donation - all proceeds go to Dòrlach, our Scottish micro-charity that exists to support the preservation of Gaelic dialects and lore and the intersection of Gaelic and other Indigenous nations’ pathways to cultural regeneration and sovereignty.

Healing Across Waters - The Highland Welcome........ Fàilte! Welcome!
This Solstice you are invited to join a truly special, immersive gathering on the land in the Scottish Highlands to Heal Across Waters; to (re)connect with Scottish Highland culture, landbased roots, practices and ways of being.
This gathering will be hosted by Gaelic culture revivalists, tradition bearers and social activists from Scotland and Ireland, deeply rooted in the growing movements of healing and restoring our precolonial roots, identities, cosmologies and practices.

This Gathering is curated specifically for the Diaspora, those who are ancestrally of Scotland (or Ireland) but were born/raised on other lands.

We invite you to be welcomed home to the land of your ancestors, to celebrate, to grieve, to be held and reconnected to the living current of Highland and Gaelic culture and lifeways -- and to bring these seeds of cultural grounding back to your home communities, for solidarity with other land based peoples, cultural resurgence, land defence and allyship. We are more than half full already and we are truly over the moon to have such devoted applicants joining us for this transformational immersion. During this Gathering you will be guided and supported as you:
-Are hosted by tradition-bearers of Scottish/Gaelic culture
-Co-create and participate in culturally grounded, healing ceremony & practices;
-Disconnect from your phone, and connect deeply with the wild northern Highlands of Scotland;
-Work with -- forage and eat! -- traditional and wild foods;
-Learn and sing Gaelic songs;
-Engage with traditional crafts & highland lifeways;
-Learn inspiring frameworks for solidarity, allyship and community-building in the face of colonial violence;
-Build community and meet soul friends for your own journey forward. We will be exploring questions such as;
How do we return to the land in a good way after the deep severance that has taken place?
...more to be seen in the book.ing form. Link in byeoh. Bigí linn. We've got an epic team of facilitators & supporters - think co-creating a village vibe! Link in byeoh @deep.roots.alba @shannonsoulsounds @dorlachalba @fandabiwilderness by @dorlachalba
