This new paper - published today in Nature - describes a unique reproductive system, where in spite of sexual reproduction with meiosis and fertilization that lead to seed production, the resulting offspring are all genetically identical to the mother (like in asexual reproduction).

How does it happen?

There are no crossovers in either male or female meiosis (achiasmy), certain haplotypes are preferentially transmitted through both pollen and egg (meiotic drive), and there is strong post-zygotic selection that removes recombinant and homozygous seeds leaving only the offspring genetically identical to the mother. This is a really unique system and described here for the first time, in a South American plant species 𝘙𝘩𝘺𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘢 𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘪𝘴.

Congratulations to all the authors!

Thanks @marques_et_al for trusting my illustration skills - I’m so happy to be a part of this and have contributed to illustrations and figure design. by @dorotdesigns

Thanks @maurineneiman for sending my t-shirt! I love how the colours turned out 🌈🐌
In case you are - like us - a fan of rainbow snails, there are more products with these scientific heroes/queer icons in my redbubble shop https://www.redbubble.com/people/DorotDesigns/shop by @dorotdesigns

Rainbow snail sticker? Yes please! Head to my Redbubble store to get them: https://www.redbubble.com/people/DorotDesigns/shop

This iconic queer snail, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, defies binary classifications. Females can produce offspring with or without males, and there are different kinds of males too - some of them are sons of asexual females. They are scientific heroes too - they are models for evolutionary biology research which aims to understand why organisms reproduce sexually (while asexual cloning is faster and more efficient). They are also models for research on biological invasions, as some asexual clones spread globally from their native New Zealand. Check out my collection of rainbow snails in five different colours! Featuring an extremely rare, sinistral (left-handed) coiling snail in blue. by @dorotdesigns

Last year, I designed a set of learning materials for the Conservation Genetics Workshop, a course aimed at practitioners working in biodiversity conservation. They are available in German, French, Italian, and English under a CC BY license: free to use, share, and modify.

They address three main topics:
1. types of molecular markers 🧬,
2. the meaning and relevance of essential biodiversity variables (EBVs) 🐞🌳,
3. best practices for transdisciplinary project planning 📑.

To celebrate Pride Month, here's an iconic queer snail, Potamopyrgus antipodarum. Defying binary classifications, females produce offspring with or without males. There are different kinds of males, too - some of them are sons of asexual females.
Science gets better when we appreciate the diversity and complexity of nature.

This snail silhouette is available to download from PhyloPic, free to use and modify.

How is fertilisation different between flowering plants 🌺 and naked-seed plants, like conifers 🌲?

This illustration, comparing fertilisation in angiosperms (A) and gymnosperms (B), has been commissioned by Tanja Pyhäjärvi and Robert Kesälahti from the University of Helsinki.

It is now freely available on Wikimedia Commons under a CC BY 4.0 licence, free to share and remix with attribution.

I hope it will be used widely, so please share it with other educators!

It’s here! Such a thrill to hold the book in my hands: “The Communicating Scientist” with my illustrations inside. It’s the kind of book I wish I had when I was a PhD student, and I’m glad to have it as a reference as a communications professional #SciComm #illustration #scientificillustration #graphicdesign by @dorotdesigns
