Felix Ziem captures Venice at its most theatrical.

A ceremonial cannon shot sends a billowing cloud of smoke across the lagoon, while flags stream from the masts and gondolas fill the shimmering water. Beyond the festivities rises the unmistakable silhouette of Venice and the Campanile of St Mark’s.

Ziem returned to Venice again and again throughout his career, drawn to the city’s architecture, water and extraordinary Mediterranean light. Here, his fascination with all three comes together: smoke merges with the luminous blue sky, while vivid flashes of colour ripple across the water below.

A fleeting moment of Venetian spectacle, seen through Ziem’s remarkable eye for light and colour.

A good book, even better company, and some feline mischief.

In Eugen von Blaas’ paintings, even the quietest moments have a story to tell. So engrossed in their reading, the two women seem blissfully unaware of the little feline commotion happening on the carpet below. It does really seem like some stories are simply too good to put down.

A wonderful meet-up at @dorotheum in Vienna for a special auction! ✨

@angelika.rosam, falstaff LIVING and @nadinekrausdrasche invited guests to an exclusive preview at Palais Dorotheum ahead of »The Art of Luxury – Hundred Highlights from an Important German Collection«, curated by @philippdemeter, Head of Jewellery Department at Dorotheum.

Assembled over more than 25 years, the single-owner collection centres on Cartier, Bvlgari and Hermès: Highlights include LOVE bracelets, Cartier high jewellery pieces, a Panthère watch with black jade, an unheated 5.50 ct Vietnamese ruby and a Hermès Sac de Voyage Birkin 55.

The guests were exclusively invited to try on the pieces before the auction which takes place on 22 October 2026 at 2 pm at Palais Dorotheum, with viewing open until 21 October.
