Sept 15 @SummerStage: A rare live NYC concert (his first in nearly 40 years!) by Los Angeles native @DannyElfman 🎤 🎸, the incredibly prolific TV/film composer (The Simpsons, Tim Burton films, and Sam Raimi's Spiderman are just a few of many) and former leader of new wave band Oingo Boingo (which he disbanded due to severe tinnitus & hearing loss), brought out a surprisingly young crowd, some dressed in Beetlejuice-inspired outfits or in full Halloween-style makeup, for an eclectic 25-song set (many with a full orchestra with a choral section) comprised of Boingo songs, familiar themes from soundtracks (including Batman, Beetlejuice, and The Simpsons), and harder-edged post-Boingo solo material from 2021 @AntiRecords/@EpitaphRecords LP Big Mess and an upcoming album.

The elaborately tattooed Elfman is in great shape at 73, and despite the hearing loss, sang with impressive range, backed by a dynamic band of musicians who have overlapped in other bands, including with Elfman latter-day influence @NineInchNails members @RobinFinck 🎸 & @JoshFreese 🥁 (also of earlier Elfman influence Devo), @NiliBrosh 🎸 🎤, @MattMcJunkins bass/🎤, @IreneKimPiano 🎹, and @DorothyMicklea 🪇 🪘.

With the extended orchestral ensemble, Elfman was able to represent his fecund musical mind that integrates musical styles & inspirations ranging from classical (Bernard Herrmann, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev), ska (Madness, The Specials) to art punk (XTC, Devo) to progressive metal & industrial, infused with his macabre lyrics, in stellar and surprising arrangements that delighted the crowd.

Here's a lightly-edited extended clip of "The Simpsons Theme" leading directly into Oingo Boingo's 1st single "Only a Lad", which was written in 1978 and first appeared appeared on Oingo Boingo's self-titled 1980 debut EP, and contains recognizable motifs that Elfman would later use in 1989 for @TheSimpsons theme music.

Jae-Mi Shishido, my best buddy and partner-in-crime, was just diagnosed with rectal cancer. I'm asking for your help.

We're blessed because the fight is going to be a journey, not a timeline. Jae-mi will need support while she's fighting this awful disease, and we still don't know which costs will be covered throughout treatment. I wouldn't normally ask for $ under normal circumstances. But this is anything but normal.

📸Pic2: Finding Joy in the little things while in a yucky hospital room...

I am asking for donations on behalf of my dear friend (no amount is too small). The GoFundMe is below.
Thank you so much for reading, really.

What a special night last I had last night! Got to have an amazing #templeuniversity Percussion reunion at the Cal State Long Beach University Percussion Ensemble!
My dear colleagues are doing incredible work with this gifted class of students. So proud of my #philly #alanabel Fam holding it down in Socal!!!

The program was awesome, innovative, and virtuosic. The repertoire traced the development of The percussion ensemble idiom from its roots to today.
Thanks to @thejenya9 for reminding us to pose for a photo while we were "nerding out." So great to see you guys in your teacher mode!
