🌿 A new chapter for ReSidence begins
Since last July, our research demonstrator has been nestled between the grape vines on Sommerberg in Ebringen near Freiburg.
ReSidence now serves as a viewing platform over the Rhine Valley and an info point about wine traditions and local sights. A second life for our Demonstrator.
Earth, willow, flax and timber. Digitally designed, robotically fabricated. No concrete — just a circular bioeconomy you can walk through.
We didn't just design for disassembly — we proved it. Moving ReSidence from Wangen im Allgäu to Ebringen meant unbuilding the whole structure and putting it back up again, demonstrating in practice what circular construction really means: a building that can be unbuilt, relocated, and rebuilt without waste or loss.
Come visit — and see for yourself how we want to build sustainably in the future. Enjoy the view! 👀🌄

Project: TerraTimber
Design: @ddf.kit and @dos.kit
Location: Karlsruhe, Germany
Building area: 12.5 m²
Ammodo Architecture Award for local scale 2025

Conceived as both a research project and a teaching platform, TerraTimber challenges the linear model of extract, build and discard by proposing a circular, regenerative alternative. Designed to adapt to diverse contexts, the prototype relies on minimal technology and uses locally sourced materials. Its methods can be transferred to low-resource settings, offering affordable, energy-efficient building systems that support local economies and skill development.

The design team follows a bottom-up approach, allowing the architecture to emerge from the available materials. Each reclaimed timber element is scanned so its size, curvature and imperfections inform the design. This material-driven process produces architecture that is contextually grounded and inherently unique. The result is a construction language that celebrates both imperfection and exactness.

The project is awarded in the Local Scale category for its innovative use of natural materials and its thoughtful integration of technology with vernacular traditions. The project investigates circular construction methodologies that merge reclaimed materials with digital design and fabrication to address social and ecological responsibility in the built environment. Developed at the Department of Architecture at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the project explores the structural and aesthetic potential of hybrid systems made from reclaimed wood and earth. The result is a modular system of columns, beams, slabs and walls that demonstrates how waste materials can be transformed into architectural resources.

ReFrame [3/3] An industrial robotic arm on a linear axis executes automated pick-and-place routines, handling the reclaimed timber's irregular geometries and small deviations. Robotic nailing with wooden nails forms precise timber-to-timber joints. The result is also expressive: ReFrame makes the qualities of reclaimed timber visible, revealing variety and traces of prior use, and turning irregularities into a distinctive part of the design language.

ReFrame [2/3] We inventorise each piece of reclaimed timber, then use a computational workflow to generate and evaluate multiple component variations. The design aligns itself with the actual inventory while balancing structural performance, fabrication requirements, and production time. When no match is possible, we supplement with sawmill-sourced timber, still aiming to minimise cutting and reduce waste. By working with dimensions, imperfections, and fibre directions rather than against them, we produce assemblies that are modular in principle yet unique in detail.

ReFrame [1/3] ReFrame is a modular prototype for circular construction. It explores how reclaimed timber can be assembled into building elements through digital design and robotic fabrication. At the component level, joints are made with wooden nails and dowels to keep the assemblies mono-material in timber. For connecting components together, we use reversible metal fixings to enable fast assembly and disassembly.

Shown in July 2025 at Klima Akademie @ Das Fest, Karlsruhe. The installation will be reassembled over the coming years.

komorebi - Japanese for the sunlight filtering through trees – showcases ongoing research by @dos.kit and @ddf.kit on digital technologies for circular and sustainable construction, the use of naturally sourced and renewable materials, along with structural geometry and controlled elastic bending.
komorebi features prominent sail elements made of robotically wound flax fibres which provide shade and protection from the sun, enhancing the visitor’s comfort especially in the hot summer months.
The shading sails seamlessly attach to the column, which is produced by elastically bending straight, thin strips of timber into the target shape, therefore achieving full structural capacity just by using simple and off-the-shelf materials. Rather than being glued together, the timber layers are finally laminated using mechanical fasteners, allowing full separation of the timber lamellas while preserving recyclability.
