NEW ALBUM “ES AMOR” OUT NOW

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

For your Grammy® Consideration • ES AMOR • Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album.

Produced by Grammy Award–winning Beto Martinez and released on @otherly_love , Es Amor is a groove haven—a thrumming balm for hard days. Across ten tracks, tight, intricate arrangements bring son jarocho and cumbia together with psychedelic rock, contemporary jazz, and Afro-Cuban percussion in a distinctly Américan conversation, creating peaks and valleys meant to be met with hips, feet, hands, and hearts.

While writing the title track “Es Amor,” Chávez was struck by a melody that felt strangely familiar; weeks later, he discovered that his father had recorded that melody decades earlier. “Making this album together, each of us bringing our own stories and experiences, I couldn’t help but think of my father, of his melody, of everyone like him, then and now,” Chávez said. “Of people, immigrants, writing and singing love songs in the most brutal of circumstances, amidst power working to deny them their very humanity.” In turn, Dos Santos remind us of our linked stories and places and movements, and, in the face of overwhelming odds, of the urgency of renewed connection, and of what that feeling can sound like.

Equal parts dream and memory, spirit echo and migration story, this album’s core message—delivered with ánimo and style—love, in all its shades and surprise appearances, remains the most spirited, lasting response to a world marred by hate.

For the second year, Global Groove joins the Earshot Jazz Festival.

Since 1984, Earshot Jazz has honored jazz as a vital Black American art form and supported the artists who carry it forward. We’re grateful to share their stage.

For the last 5 years Global Groove has celebrated global music and diasporic culture, and this is the second month of our new residency at Baba Yaga. For this night, Earshot brings Dos Santos from Chicago, blending jazz and cumbia with songs about migration and identity, they released a new album, Es Amor, this year. We complete the night with our international guest DJ Sabroso (Alfredo Villar), a Peruvian writer and collector behind the Cumbia Beat compilations of Peruvian tropical music; our resident DJ Mr. Nice, connecting the African diaspora with the Caribbean and Latin America; and Rizoma, opening with a global music vinyl set.

************
For decades, Dos Santos members Jaime Garza and Alex E. Chávez have been students and practitioners of traditional Mexican musics, including the Afro-diasporic son jarocho of Southern Mexico and the huapango stylings of the Central Mexican highlands. These sounds—known the world over—are an indispensable part of Mexico’s musical legacy. On Cielos, Dos Santos draws on these influences—their rhythms, instruments, and poetics—as the foundation of a song that harkens toward the spirit and feel of son jarocho and huapango. The traditional leona, jarana, and quijada instruments are at the heart of the composition, which also incorporates afro-Latin percussion and keyboards. The lyrics—written by both Garza and Chávez—are in the traditional copla style found throughout Latin America and speak of dancing as both embodied memory and deeply connected to the ebbs and flows of nature. And in that spirit, musically, the composition evokes the sounds of a late-night, fire-breathing fandango, as musicians passionately sing and play—casting out melodies and verses into the night—while dancers trace out poetry with their patterned steps past sunrise. by @dossantoschi
